Looking for a dressmaker who can specialize in Asian attire near nyc

Emily, on July 29, 2019 at 12:00 PM Posted in New York Planning 0 3

Hi all!

I'm looking for a dressmaker near the NYC area, (even if it's in another state) who would be able to bring to life my dream of having an Asian fusion wedding dress. My fiance is from Punjab, so I would like a skirt that nods to a lehenga, but with the top being more Chinese. I've been searching high and low, but I'm finding very few hits on the east coast (unsurprisingly). I've been wary about not being able to go to fittings in person, as long as I have the correct measurements, should I just let it go? Perhaps get it a bit larger and just get it altered? I'm at a loss. Any help or advice would be wonderful!

I would think you can maybe search for seamstresses in Flushing, Queens or a similar neighborhood. If you haven't tried that route already.

    Hi there Emily!

Welcome to the WeddingWire community Smiley smile

Your vision sounds amazing! I really hope you can find someone to help you bring it to life.

I would recommend you check out Yelp for researching and finding dressmakers. This list is the top dressmakers in New York. You could use this as your base for reaching out to different dressmakers you feel would be skilled to make this dress.

As Hannah mentioned, it could be a great idea to look in neighborhoods with a large Asian community. You could play around with different location on Yelp and see if you can find more to reach out to.

I hope this is helpful in your search Smiley smile

Thanks for the tips from both of you! I definitely considered Flushing, my only qualm was how to find someone reputable that would suit my needs. My fiance came here 4 years ago so doesn't have roots in the community to find people via word of mouth, and I don't speak Chinese fluently (not that's it's mandatory, but it definitely helps!). Most of them probably don't have websites so I'll have my work cut out for me, but maybe it'll be an adventure!

As for Yelp, that's what I was scouring yesterday, I'm not sold that they would have enough expertise in something as specific as what I'm looking for, but again, I won't know until I try/ ask!
