Long vs short bridesmaid dresses?

Courtney, on December 12, 2015 at 8:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

Just curious on everyone's opinions on long vs short bridesmaid dresses? I'm getting married at the Georgetown Centre (pictured) in Pittsburgh, so it's formal, but not extremely formal like some others I've seen. Which dresses do you ladies prefer? I'm honestly not picky just want everyone at least in the same length. I initially was leaning towards tall, but my FH thinks we should go short. Opinions are welcome. Thank you!

@originalLaura you can still go long esp in march in Texas.

I prefer long. Looks formal & more uniform esp on different shapes and heights. For example half of my BMs are a size 8. But some are an 8 & 5'2 while some are an 8 & 5'9. Some have wider hips, longer torso, bigger butt or longer legs. Same short dress looks different on all of them abd stops at different parts of their legs/thighs. My wedding is pretty formal. But I'm always team long gown.

For a more formal wedding I would go long. Do your bridesmaids have a preference? If you don't care maybe you can defer to them.

While either are fine, I prefer long.

What's the weather like? If it's warm I would go short for everyone's comfort. I was in a July wedding and we had black dresses... It was so hot!!

Mine was September but I still did short.

If you do long consider chiffon which is more breathable. Long satin is usually for very formal weddings.

What time is your ceremony? Mine is at 5pm, so my BP & both mothers are wearing long dresses.

We are doing long which was what all my bridesmaids wanted. The nice thing is they can wear any shoes they want since they won't be seen

I like both. My bridesmaids have floor length dresses, and my junior bridesmaids have knee length. Have you asked your BMs which they prefer?

Date twin! I'd go with long, honestly. I've always felt like short dresses don't look as good unless it's a casual/garden/outdoor wedding.

I'm doing all long for my bms. 1 of my bm is religious so I'm doing what I can to make her comfortable.

I chose short and ended up regretting it. I so wish I had chosen long.

We are doing long dresses, in Texas, in June. I just know I would be self conscience of my calves and figured some of my bridesmaids would be too and we are going for a very classic look which wouldn't look right with short dresses.

I told my BMs to choose. They originally said short and then ended up loving long dresses. I actually prefer long too.

I was thinking about doing long dresses (although I've always liked short), and I found some I really like... but as I think about it 2 of my bridesmaids are very slender and the dress would look excellent on them, but my MOH is a bit larger and I'm afraid the dress would accent that... I have no way of knowing, though, because she lives in TX (I live in KS) and I won't see her until the week before the wedding which is far too late.

I prefer long overall. It feels more wedding-y to me. But really I would ask your BMs. Sometimes they will have strong opinions on things like this. I originally decided on long dresses for a reason that ended up not mattering but my MOH was actually really happy because she feels better in a long dress than a short one so it worked out for the best anyhow.

Since I'm gonna have a short dress, I'm doing short dresses because it would feel weird otherwise. But we are doing a casual brunch wedding.

I've been in 7 weddings. I've always like the long dresses better. Personal preference.

@nowaseptmrs my wedding is September 17, so it's early fall/ end of summer. I would definitely go for a chiffon type fabric since it's more breathable and flattering for everyone. @kimi, mine is a night ceremony at five. I'm thinking long is the winner. Thank you everyone for your help!
