Long Veil Or Short Veil?

Lisa, on September 14, 2020 at 7:35 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 36
My dress has a long, very detailed train. I was originally planning on doing a fingertip veil, but after seeing so many beautiful pictures of long veils, I'm considering a longer veil instead (maybe a floor length veil, but not a cathedral veil). Would a floor length veil look OK with this dress? Or would the fingertip veil be better?

Here is a picture of my dress (obviously this is not me in the picture, and my dress is also ivory/ivory instead of nude/ivory).

I think you can but I would make sure the veil can flow past the train. Since the dress has a lot of detail going on (in a good way of course, it's beautiful) I would maybe do a plain veil or one with a not very thick lace applique. My dress is a ball gown with a train and I still got a cathedral veil. I recommend Samantha from Blanca Veils.

I paid like $140ish for my beaded brand fingertip, but in the end I decided to go with a cathedral length. Extra long simple wide veil with 3” comb for my small head. I too have detailed train. I think the simple yet long veil give sooo much possibly for wedding pictures.

I am wearing a cathedral veil eith a lace border that matches the lace on my train. Does your dress maker perhaps make a long veil that you could consider?

I would want a veil no longer than fingertip, or to hips,to show the beautiful train of that dress. And this particular dress would look excellent with a small headpiece or tiny hat or hair jewelry, and a birdcage veil, if one would flatter your face. If you are considering a cathedral length veil, put on a dress with a train, and a full long veil, particularly one with an outer border design, or light beading at the outer edges to keep it down, and walk around with it for 10-15 minutes. Many brides find the weight on their head and pulling as they walk miserable, and in hot weather find full long layers of veiling annoying even just for the ceremony. Don't choose on looks alone.

Thank you for your reply! So I should do a cathedral veil instead of a floor length? I was planning to do a simple veil, the fingertip one I picked out has a very thin beading around the edge, but otherwise completely plain. I was thinking that if I do a longer veil instead, it would be similar (maybe beading around the edge, and plain elsewhere), just not sure if a longer veil would work with this dress.

Thanks for the shop recommendation! I'll have to go check them out!

Thank you for your reply! Do you have a picture of how your cathedral veil looks with the detailed train? I love the way long veils look! I'm hoping it could work for my dress, but if not, I'd be fine wearing the fingertip veil too.

Here is what I really recommend. Go to a local bridal store and try on the various veils. Maybe you can even bring your dress to see? I would say try on the different lengths and even the width of the bottom of the veil to see which would be best. I guess I see things this way, I am having a minimony but how often do I get to wear a veil. I figured this is the one day to go big. I do not think you would regret getting a longer veil ha ha. I would just try someone at a store but you are not obligated to buy of course and see how you feel. Maybe at the end of the day you prefer the fingertip. Smiley smile

I don't know if they have a matching cathedral veil. They definitely have a fingertip veil that matches it, but I'm not sure I like how the lace looks on the veil combined with the lace on the dress. The dress designer definitely has other cathedral veils available, I just don't know which length would be best with the dress (fingertip, floor, or cathedral). Regardless of veil length, I was thinking of doing a simpler veil with a thin beading on the edge.

With this kind of dress, I probably wouldn't do a veil at all. The dress is very detailed and a veil may take away from it.

I think that a floor length veil would look right with the dress. I actually think it’ll look really pretty together especially if it’s longer than the train!

That is a good point! I didn't realize that longer veils are that heavy (but I've never really worn a veil, so I'm not sure of the weight of any of them). I'm hesitant to cover up the train with a cathedral veil because I love the detail of the train, so I was considering a floor length. I will have to see if I can somehow find different ones to try on with my dress and see how they feel after a period of time. Thank you for your advice!

Oh my gosh - great suggestion! I hadn't even thought about going to try them on with the dress! I never realized that might be an option since I already have my dress, and I was looking at veils online. I will have to check with the shop to make sure I can do this. Thanks for the idea!!

Gurl cathedral veils cost money so before you drop that kind of cash you want to be sure ha ha. I don't know if a random shop will let you come in with the dress and try on but at least have a picture of the dress and they can help you with the style. If you choose online I like Blanca Veils because she can do a custom order based on colors and lace applique she has and you can purchase a swatch sample to match up to your dress.

I love this dress, it is absolutely gorgeous! You could definitely get away with no veil because the detail in the dress is so amazing, but I think if you want one, I'd go for a fingertip length that doesn't have a lot of detail so as not to take away from the dress.

Thank you for your reply! I agree that finding a veil might be tough with this dress, which I'm a little nervous about. I'm really hoping to wear a veil, so I'm hoping a simple one with no lace or decorations on it would be most likely to work.

Thank you for your reply! Do you think floor length (ends around my heels and not covering the train) or cathedral length (beyond the train) would be better? I'm nervous about covering the train since the train is so detailed, but cathedral veils do look so pretty.

Totally agree on being sure before buying!! I definitely don't want to spend money to find out I don't like it lol. I think I've seen a few people mention Blanca Veils on here, definitely on my list to check them out once I'm able to try on a few different veils in a store. Good to know that they can match fabrics!

Thank you for your reply! I agree that if doing a veil, a simple veil would be best. The fingertip veil that I had originally picked out is completely plain, except for a thin line of beading along the edge.
