Long sleeve or short sleeve?

FutureMrsJ, on February 23, 2016 at 11:56 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

Not sure if anyone's really seen my other post about my small wedding, but in case you haven't since I'm new here I'll give you the quick run down. We're having a very small wedding with only a few friends and family. It won't be very long--- a ceremony and dinner, but we're having it once it starts to get hot. My problem? I've wanted a long sleeve lace wedding dress my entire life, and even though I won't be in it THAT long I'm afraid I'll end up sweating and I'll be miserable.

I'm also worried that I might look to.....over done? It's a simple wedding we're having pretty much so we have something nice to look back on, does a big gown seem like too much for something like that? My FH thinks I should go for it because it's what I've always wanted, I just figured I'd ask for some opinions.

I struggled with this as well, but I ultimately comfort rules the day. I'm sure you will find a stunning dress that is weather appropriate. What about a long sleeved bolero that you could remove once you start to warm up? I've seen some beautiful one's posted here on WW.

Its your special day. If you've been dreaming of it forever, go for it!

Maybe you can get a little lace jacket thing so you can remove the long sleeves after the ceremony.

What about a short or tea length dress with long sleeves? I would also be worried about getting hot because I get hot really easily. That said if I always imagined myself in that style I'd probably go with that and have FH fan me when I got too hot haha

Thanks so much for all the input! I was definitely thinking a short dress for a while, but I've always hated gloves. I found this amazing dress, surprisingly, on etsy that can be custom made for me. They've got nothing but great reviews so I might end up going with them for the dress. I mean, seriously, look at how pretty this thing is!?

Maybe compromise and go with a 3/4 length sleeve? My wedding was also in June. It wasn't very hot though. I loved having a dress with sleeves.

@Hope Thank you! It is from DB. There weren't a lot of sleeved dress options. The sleeve material wasn't very heavy, kind of a knit lace material so it was comfortable, not itchy.

Your dress is beautiful, but I think you'll definitely be hot. It looks like a bunch of layers.

I'm going to check out DB soon and see if there's anything I like there @simpleseamstress but I think you and @s&J are right-- it might be better to go with shorter sleeves. Fingers crossed I find something I like, and thank you everyone!!

You should definitely get the dress you always dreamed of. I had a strapless dress and a church wedding. I felt my dress was too revealing for church so I found the perfect lace jacket at DB. Luckily I was able to take it off after the ceremony even though we got married in October it ended up being 94 degrees, so freaking hot! Some of my favorite pictures are with the jacket! Smiley smile

For my first (June) wedding, I had a long-sleeved dress. It was actually not as warm as the strapless dress I had for my second wedding. The warmth of the dress is more related to number of layers (of the dress, and whatever you wear under it) and the fabric than to the sleeve length. Lace sleeves don't tend to create a lot of warmth.

@SimpleSeamstress I bought the same dress for my wedding in October and I can't wait to wear it.

    It looks gorgeous on you!

@Hope I bought it for the same reasons you're debating... I wanted sleeves, but want to be comfortable in any weather that rolls around in October. I get really hot, and HATE heat, but since the sleeves are lace, they're not too hot.

Have you tried on dresses? Start there, the style I thought I wanted was soooo wrong for me.

Honey I would go for what I had my heart set on and start trying on dresses. We are only having us and the children and we went with vera Wang because that is what we always wanted.

I agree with Kait- make sure to try on dresses before you buy one. I had my heart set on a long sleeved dress and hated how I looked in them. I ended up with the complete opposite of what I thought i wanted.

I say go with what makes you feel good but I must say dress shopping is very overwhelming and most of them are not very comfortable . I'm having a July beach wedding so I went for as light and airy as I could . All the other dresses I thought I liked were too tight and heavy and itchy , not comfortable and I don't want to be sweaty hot mess . I think when you try on dresses you will know what you want .

Those are very pretty dresses and it looks like the sleeves are lace which will help in the heat. Go for what you've dreamed of!

I hope a big gown wouldn't be too much, because I had a very small wedding and I wear a ballgown with a cathedral length veil that trail behind me. But long sleeves in a gown can be uncomfortable if its hot, so I'd see about no sleeves and then having a jacket for if it gets cooler. I completely obsessed about every little detail on my dress particularly since I'm the one that designed and made it. You want your dress to look beautiful, but

the day of the wedding, you're not going to be looking in a mirror all day. Your comfort and the way you feel in the dress on the day of the wedding is much more important. And I remember even thinking that the day of the wedding.

The wonderful thing about entertaining lace sleeves is that there is plenty of "venting" to allow air flow between you and the fabric.

A tighter fitting sleeve may possibly be warmer than one that is loose fitting. Go with your long time dream!
