Long engagement/ when to start purchasing decor?

on January 5, 2020 at 9:51 AM Posted in Planning 0 10
Hello everyone. I have a long engagement about 17 months but I wanted to know for those of you that also have long engagements/or who have had long engagements, when did you start purchasing wedding decor and miscellaneous items (ie: flower petals, dollar tree flowers, charger plates, basically all of the small items we all have in a wish list somewhere for the wedding day.) I want to buy it throughout the span of the engagement so I’m not hit with a huge bill all at once. So when did/do you plan to buy things, and which items did you start with?

I made it a point to purchase something for the wedding every paycheck. They were small purchases each time so if barely seemed like anything. My guest room is full of wedding stuff already and we’re months out!

That’s a perfect plan I’ll definitely do that every paycheck so it doesn’t make my pockets hurt. But it’s definitely going to be a challenge for our small studio.

I bought stamps, candles, jewelry, and shoes before we were engaged bc if it didn’t work out those would still be used. Then after we got engaged I bought all the diy decor, place cards, guest book, more candles, card box, little things like that. Partly bc I had to leave them in NC when we moved across the country and didn’t want to pay to ship them. My next step was my garter, wedding sign, cake topper, veil, one thing each month. The closer you get to the wedding the more you have to pay the big vendor bills and tip money so I think 17 months is the perfect time to get decor and accessories.

We have an 18 month engagement, and I started purchasing items a year out. It was the best decision! We are now under 8 months out and over half of our items are purchased! Helps lower the stress.

We are having a 2 year engagement. Once I decided on a theme & color scheme, I made a list of everything we needed & started purchasing things immediately. It’s so much more manageable to buy things gradually than all at once. I have the invitations/info cards, postage, tablecloths, napkins, charger plates, table numbers & decor, cake stand, dress, shoes, accessories, and deposits on all vendors. Only a few more things to purchase, then we’ll have 10 months to pay off the vendors. I would highly suggest getting as much done as possible as early as possible - less stress!!

I bought a ton of stuff during black Friday. I have slowly gathered items since my FH and I got engaged. I went on a shopping trip with my mom and we bought decor at Michael's and hobby lobby. I have some more items I have to buy but I have time. I keep checking sales online and at hobby lobby. Then I have some DIY stuff I have to do but will have to wait till the spring or summer to do so.

I started purchasing things for the wedding about 2 months into our 19 month engagement. Like PP said, it helped it to spread out the cost instead of making single huge purchases.
I made our centerpieces, so I started off by buying the vases from the dollar store and getting the spray paint. Then, I bought to atlases and supplies needed to make paper flowers from maps (our wedding is travel themed).
We are down to 9 months until wedding day and I recently bought my hair comb and started looking at bridal party gifts.
It's definitely not too early to buy things!
