Live Piano Music VS CD Music at Ceremony

Lindsey, on March 7, 2014 at 7:32 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

We are getting married May 17, 2014 so this decision needs to be made. The pastor at the church is kind of trying to push us towards live organ playing, but that just isn't something I think I want. My vision includes the CD music because of a couple of songs I would love to play when I walk down the isle and throughout our ceremony... but I would settle for piano music.

The CD songs I was wanting are

Christina Perry - A Thousand Years

Jason Mraz - I Won't Give Up

and maybe John Legend - All of Me

If we decided on piano music instead, I am trying to talk my groom into the idea of his two brothers (who are fantastic singers) singing the Jason Mraz song with the piano playing. He doesn't seem completely into the idea though.

I don't know how easy it is to plan the timing for CD songs. I don't know how qualified the "AV guy" at the church is.

What do you think is better for a ceremony?

I was concerned about using an Ipod or something also, as with our luck it would play the wrong song at the wrong time, lol. My venue has both a piano and an organ (complete with wall of pipes Smiley smile )I hired the step daughter and son in law of a long time friend to sing and play piano. I heard them sing and play together and was speechless. Amazing. Part of me wants the friend to sing (she teaches voice lessons and I think plays organ) but the rest of me wants her and her family to enjoy the ceremony. If you can get those guys to sing go for it. It would be a treasured memory.

Debating the same thing...but with a string quartet vs. a CD. One is $600. The other $15. Ugh!

I have the same fear Susan, I can just see the AV guy messing it up somehow... or timing just being off somehow. I love the idea of the songs I had picked... but I feel like the live piano playing will just be easier. I agree that it does sound romantic. The string quartet sounds like a BEAUTIFUL idea.

Have you confirmed with your pastor/church that there are no restrictions on what music can be played? A lot of churches don't allow pop, so if you haven't already, make sure you check.

If you go with live music, just stick with piano. I would not want my brothers singing a romantic-type song for me, either. Plus, it really is a lot to ask of someone-- they should have the benefit of being able to just focus on their brother's wedding without the added stress of singing (and even if they are seasoned performers, you better believe a close family member's wedding is more pressure than usual!)

I'm doing piano because it gives you more control on song length. I have shorter versions of different pieces picked for each group's entrance. Plus, I'm having my son play, so it's his gift to us. No brainer!

We had a live piano and flute duo, so obviously I'm on team life music. But I agree with Barbara about the singing.

Until yesterday, I was going with a CD. Now, I'm going with live piano, more elegant and classy to me! My DJ charging extra money to do the ceremony helped me make my decision. But, now I'm happy! Lol

Go with the piano, live music ( if they are good) makes the momemnt much more touching. saying the because I have played at a wedding. Smiley smile

My brother went with recordings for his wedding and when the bride walked down the aisle, they did not stop the music, it played the whole song LOL

Live music always has more feeling and personality however if you can't afford that a CD used in conjunction with your DJ is the next best option. Check to make sure your DJ is familiar with the church and or venue. Ask them to attend your dress rehearsal the night before if they are close by. Any qualified professional will be able to accommodate your needs and remove the stress. I would highly recommend not using a friend with ipod due to the fact they lack experience and they should be enjoying the festivities.

Brian, you can set up a vendor account instead of a bride/groom account and still answer questions here.

I'd recommend live piano. I've been to several (nice) weddings with CD music where whoever was running the CD just abruptly would stop it between tracks. It came off as tacky and ruined the mood a bit (IMO).
