Lion dance?

So, I suddenly got the idea to surprise my guests with a traditional Chinese lion dance. FH is not Chinese, but I am. We are having a very westernized/traditional wedding. But I am thinking it would be fun/entertaining. And it would actually be right at the start of Chinese New Year. So why not!

I have read it could cost $300-800 depending on the skill level and size of the troupe.

Before I even venture further to ask my venue about whether they would permit it, I need opinions please.

My FH thinks I am insane! I would want it to be a surprise. What would you think if you were a guest? Have any of you done this? Thanks.

I've had three weddings with lion dance, always at the end of cocktail hour right before the guests were called to dinner. Each of the groups was mixed so it was probably the first time for many of the guests. The dancers did stay for some photos.

I'd say 5-10 minutes is perfect, and I thought it went over just GREAT for my groups, and I love the idea I've also had the NYFD bagpipers, which I just love too. I"ve had mariachi bands, steel drums and, although it's not really 'ethnic', acoustic folk groups. All unexpected touches and each one really enhanced the rest of the party.

I would call your dj or entertainment company; ask your venue, and of course...google.

I love when our couples do something traditional. Guests always love it. I think it would be a great surprise.

To me it's just like any other surprise performance. Like if performers showed up etc. I would not mind as a guest.

I would love it! I'm not sure exactly what it is but I love cultural traditions. Can you have someone explain it beforehand if there's a specific meaning?

I think this would be awesome! I would love to touch to my chinese background, but unfortunately hardly any of my dad's side will be able to make it. If you can afford it and find someone, I say go for it.

I think this is a great idea and it shouldn't be too difficult to find some lion dance performers in Fort Lauderdale. You could also check out local Chinese Associations.

I would love this! Another couple on here (I don't remember the thread, sorry, but I think she talked about it in her BAM) did this and it was a hit.

@Celia, you have me thinking to maybe do at end of cocktail hour. My plan was intro to reception, first dance, tarantella (I'm Italian/Irish), then seating and lion dance. Gonna fit it Irish culture somewhere, not bagpipes though.

I think it sounds amazing, as a guest I would really enjoy seeing this part of your culture on show at your wedding. I think Celia's mention of having it at the end of cocktail hour sounds like a great time to include it.

Just wanted to tell you my wedding with the Lion Dance was yesterday. It was a surprise for everyone and was amazing. Everyone kept saying "I've never seen anything like it." Husband is watching every video from our friends over and over like a little kid. He was so surprised. So, if you can, definitely do it!

I have a local lion dance team where I live and they’re charging me 400. But they said they charge up to 8 or 900 depending on travel cost
