Lion dance?

Elizabeth, on August 10, 2017 at 8:44 PM Posted in Planning 0 38

So, I suddenly got the idea to surprise my guests with a traditional Chinese lion dance. FH is not Chinese, but I am. We are having a very westernized/traditional wedding. But I am thinking it would be fun/entertaining. And it would actually be right at the start of Chinese New Year. So why not!

I have read it could cost $300-800 depending on the skill level and size of the troupe.

Before I even venture further to ask my venue about whether they would permit it, I need opinions please.

My FH thinks I am insane! I would want it to be a surprise. What would you think if you were a guest? Have any of you done this? Thanks.

I myself would love to have a lion dance too BUT can't seem to find someone to do it!

I've been to a wedding where there was a lion dance & it was pretty awesome! Our family enjoyed it even if we're not Chinese!

I've never done or seen it- but I think it's awesome if you can pay homage to your culture too! It would be unique and I would think it would really set your wedding apart from others!

@JaMiCK where are you located, if you don't mind me asking? Were troupes just not available for your date or you just couldn't find someone period?

I think it would depend on who your guests are. I am Asian, and from my perspective if the majority of your guests are Asian, then the lion dance wouldn't really be that much of a wow factor since we have grown up with this every year at Lunar New Year. If your guests are mainly of other ethniities, then maybe they would be amazed by it.

It wasn't a lion dance but I was at a wedding where the father of the bride surprised everyone with the FDNY bagpipes. (Groom is a firefighter and the bride comes from firefighters)

The emotion in the room was wonderful and it's honestly one of my favorite parts of their wedding.

In short, I think adding something like a lion dance is a wonderful idea and something your guests will love.

Do you have a local Chinese-American association? They might have a troupe or could point you in the right direction.

My husband found a local troop to do some traditional dances. They were just kids but we got to preview on YouTube videos (mexican culture, not Chinese but maybe the same principal applies?) Is there a Chinese school near the venue? Does your husband strongly identify with any specific culture? Would he want something to represent him as well?

Go for it!!! Why would it be insane? I think it would be great!! I love seeing the dances every new year!

I would love to have one at my wedding but my FH doesn't feel like it would be authentic to him because he wasn't really raised by the Chinese side of his family. While I grew up in Chinatown, I would feel terrible appropriating the custom, heh.

I was at a wedding that had a lion dance. I am Asian and I still loved it. The bride was actually part of this group, so it was a gift to the bride to have friends performing for her.

I'm doing it. FH is Chinese and it will be a surprise for him and the guests. It's costing about $1500. I'm on Long Island and that includes the 10 person group travelling from Manhattan (about 1 1/2 hours.)

@D&G114 Wow, sounds like it will be a great performance. I am leaning towards doing it too! What kind of venue will it be in? Were there any issues having firecrackers or working with ceiling height? At what point in time during your wedding will they come in?

@Elizabeth, I've never seen it done with firecrackers indoors. My venue is a Long Island catering facility. The ceiling is pretty high, I may need to have draping removed over the dance floor, which they do for custom lighting anyway. The group includes two lions. I pick the colors, I'm going with pink and gold wedding lions and then there are drummers. We "feed" the lions for good luck and they display congratulatory wedding scrolls. One in English, one in Chinese. My FH does not read Chinese but his mom and other relatives don't read English so I'm covering everyone. It will be a 10 minute performance during the first course and they will stay for pictures with the guests in the atrium of our venue. IMO 10 min is enough for the excitement without pulling too much energy from the guests wanting to dance.
