Limited bar vs. Open bar question

Gina, on November 11, 2014 at 11:11 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

Hi, girls! I just wanted your opinion of what you think is a better option for me because I keep going back and forth.

Included in my wedding package, I have a champagne hour and two bottles of wine on each table. Our wedding crowd is going to be an older crowd significantly as opposed to a younger crowd. My family and his family are wine drinkers primarily.

My question is, with my package and crowd, is a limited bar a better option for me or should I do the open bar for close to $6,000. We would be replacing the bottles of wine that are drank. I definitely want one or the other. I'm just conflicted on which one.

Edit: spelling

Limited is totally a viable option. Especially if you'll have extra wine. I love champagne so I'd be happy!

I'm doing open bar so people have options but if everyone you know drinks wine, you can probably get away with limited bar.

Everyone keeps telling me limited bar is enough for my crowd. I just don't know how long to do it for throughout the reception.

From the sounds of it, limited should be plenty with the crowd you'll have.

If mostly everyone is going to be drinking wine, save your money and do the limited bar!

The limited bar should be more than enough, you can limit it to two drinks per person or have the bartender stop serving drinks the last hour of the reception.

If it's not a crazy young crowd then you could do limited that includes wine/beer. We are having an open bar, but at my venue the wedding package that we picked comes with open bar. I understand the limited bar though if there aren't heavy drinkers. However, even with open bar if you really sit down and figure out how many drinks would need to be purchased at regular price it's not all that much and your open bar is covered for the guests.

Its all about knowing your crowd. I'll take a limited bar wedding over a dry wedding any day!

My limited bar is the guests can get whatever they want and I can cap it at any point during the reception. Thanks guys! Smiley smile

Personally I'd rather have the champagne over an open bar any day! I always miss the champagne toast if it's not at a wedding. But Id be perfectly fine with just wine and beer (if beer is an option for you).

We're really on a budget and having a daytime wedding so I'm only having beer and wine. It saved us almost 6$ per person for not having an open bar. Which in the end helped a lot!

Limited! My friend did three types of wine and three types of beer and everyone loved it. We even got to do a champagne toast! I didn't miss any of the harder alcohol a bit, a no one even noticed we had such a blast. I think she had pinot, moscato and zinfandel for their wine and that was enough for me!

Limited bar is good but I wouldn't stop it during the reception.Maybe have the wine available during dinner and open the bar after?

Lol yeah that's my next dilemma when to start and end it. They said they can tell me when they reach my maximum budget and ask me whether I want to continue it or stop it. I guess I'll have to see when I'm in there when to.

Limited sounds perfect for your group. One of my cool clients did a Prosecco bar at cocktail hour with Prosecco and a "mix in" bar of orange/pomegranate/peach juice, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, and a bottle of Cassis (to make Kir Royales). It was a gigantic hit!
