LED Candles - Yeah or No?

Sara, on September 13, 2016 at 2:09 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

FH and I have booked our reception in an upstairs room at a local Taproom (high ceilings, exposed brick walls, I'm in love), and left us with minimal policies on decorating outside of no glitter/confetti (easy to do) and no open flames. With it being in the evening with the exposed brick and all I had imaging having a romantic feel to it (lights and stuff) so I was looking into the LED pillar candles but have a weird feeling about diving into LEDs and it just not feeling the same as a legit candle. Right now I'm torn in between planning for centerpieces without candles or just going for it and including them.

My question is, if you did use LED candles or have experienced them in other weddings, how did you like them and did you feel like they set the same mood as you were hoping they would? Was there a certain brand or kind that you liked more than others?

I also attached a photo of my ideal centerpiece for reference (just without the vases)

Did you clarify with the venue that they mean no real candles at all? Or just that it has to be in a container?

If it has to be in something you could do it with the vases!

My best friend used LED tealights in her mason jar centrepieces (in her wedding 2 yrs ago). They worked well and served their purpose. (They were dollar store ones, nothing specific in terms of brand). In general I like LED candles when they cannot be seen, like inside a jar or vase that is not clear. They provide nice mood lighting, but they are cheap looking. We may use them, but only if they are inside vases and cannot be seen. For other candles (votives) on the table, we will use real ones.

I LOVE LED candles. I haven't been to weddings with them but I was just as this very cool restaurant which was dimly light and had hundreds of them spread throughout the space. It was SO romantic. Go for it!

So my FH is a firefighter and does not let me have open flame in our house because he's scared I'm going to forget and burn down our house... Anyways so we've found some LED candles that have a flame that moves around and looks real. My FMIL has some that she purchased from Kirklands which is a home decorating store kind of like TJMaxx. Otherwise I'm sure you can find them online!

I'm doing candle based centerpieces, and looked at real candles and LED - LED prices were MUCH higher for pillars than traditional candles from what I found - and just didn't give the same look. Since my centerpiece is completely candle based, I went with traditional. If I were to have something that showed more candle holder than actual candle - I would probably tried to use LED tea lights.

ETA: that being said - I'm also paying someone to come in and light all of my candles between the ceremony and the reception... so the cost may wash out. But I guess I would need someone to turn on all the LEDs too...

Unfortunately it is absolutely no candles due to fire hazards, which I completely understand.

@JSARGE - I happened to think about that as well, doing some sore of frosted vase or something to put them in as well so they can't be seen but might still give off the same effect, or using none at all because the clear you can still see right on through them.

And @ansauder95 - TBH, I'm surprised my FH hasn't done the same thing to me yet! Haha I have candles EVERYWHERE in the house. I'll have to to look into those though, thank you!

That was the other thing I was finding too is that the prices were so much more than just regular candles, PLUS batteries on top of that. Most you can control with a remote these days though, which does give options and all. Dang battery operated equipment....

I like them when I cant see the "flame", like in a frosted container or when the "flame" is deep inside the pillar.. other wise theyre too fake looking

Also, look for the ones that already have a "melted wax" effect and a "flickering flame" (something like that, I forget exactly what they are called). They look way more realistic than ones with a plastic flame sticking up above the candle. It can be done with LEDs, you just have to spend a little more on decent looking ones.

How many LED candles do you think someone would need to light a bathroom enough that people don't pee all over the place but also enough to still hide some less nice aspects of the bathroom?

For my kitchen window, I purchased one Luminara 'real-flame effect candle.' It has a light inside that shines up and illuminates a metal 'flame' that moves and gives it a flickering effect. I got the 13" size measured with base/holder -- normally priced $38.99, but 50% off. Expensive, but very real looking. Has a timer (5 hours on/19 hours off), runs on 2 AA batteries.

You probably would not need them that tall. Their website is www.Luminara.com
