Late Night Food—is it okay to skip?

Jennifer, on March 20, 2022 at 7:03 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 3 24
Our wedding is in 61 days (!!) and I am working on final details—unfortunately it doesn’t look like we have it in the budget to do late night snacks like I had hoped but I’m feeling anxious about it because it seems to be such a normal part of weddings these days that it feels like an expectation and I’m afraid guests will be disappointed. With cocktail hour at 6:30, dinner at 8, and cake cutting at 9:30 (my mom is also doing a homemade cookie display), I feel like our guests shouldn’t be hungry, but I’m still stressed! Am I the only one not partaking in late night snacks?

It’s perfectly acceptable to skip the late night snack. Many couples don’t serve any food after dinner and an equal number don’t have cocktail hours. Every wedding is different and based solely on your budget and preference. Don’t let any Instagram trends pressure you into going over budget if it doesn’t work for you.

We’re not serving late night snacks really. Our favors are snack boxes but people won’t be taking those until they’re on their way out the door

It’s fine to skip late night snacks. I probably wouldn’t be hungry after a dinner that late any way.

We did late night pizza and since there was so much food from our buffet and dessert table (I didn't realize how much they gave per person) many didn't touch the pizza. I would skip it. If they are still hungry they'll eat on their way home. Especially since your cake it later in the night, most will be done eating after cake.

I’m not doing it. I guess it depends on what’s tradition for everyone. What you might expect on a wedding day may not be what someone else expect. I realize that us, brides, think way too much about what others are going to say on OUR big day. I taught myself that if a person makes me feel like that then maybe they shouldn’t be invited to my wedding in the first place💯💯but you’re not alone, my fiancé and I are not doing late night snacks. Good luck in whichever you decide❤️

My venue requires a late night snack for evening events. I think the idea is it gives people something else besides alcohol to consume later, and thus helps keep them from getting too drunk. So, I would definitely check if your venue requires it, but if not, then it's totally up to you!

We didn’t have any for our guests. It wasn’t even a thought. Since our venue was located downtown, there were plenty of options for guests if they required that. Also, it was a destination wedding we knew some guests would be leaving immediately after the reception so didn’t have to include this.

I went to a wedding where late night snacks were served and it was one of the best weddings I’ve ever attended! They brought out frenchfries chicken tenders and pizza and everyone continued to dance and eat.

I went to another wedding where there were late night snacks served at an after party. That felt forced in my opinion. We all left the reception and then went to this other room where food was laid out and then another room where people were hanging out by the bar.
My own wedding did not include snacks. I wouldn’t provide late night snacks if it’s not in your budget and because your dinner is so late!

I don’t think you should be stressing….You are providing more than enough food opportunities for your guests.

I got married Saturday, and we didn’t do the late night snacks. Honestly, no one looked for them or expected them. I think dinner is so late, unless you go until 1 or 2 in the morning I would spend the money.

We initially wanted to have pizzas or like philly pretzels as a late night snack, but it's really not in our budget and we're providing 7 appetizers plus an antipasto display during cocktail hour, a full buffet with three entrees, three sides, two types of pasta, a salad, rolls. Plus a dessert table later in the evening. I don't think anyone will miss an additional food item.

I didn’t add that on to my package because between the open bar, dinner and cake/dessert bar, I’m feeding the guests enough. If they are hungry after, they can go through a drive thru on the way home.

Totally fine to skip it if you don't have the budget! If someone really wants something after dinner and dessert, I'm sure there's a fast food chain nearby.

Hey wedding buddy!!! Getting married on May 21st as well! 😀
My mom wants to do these as well as she noticed it’s popular these days, but I’m trying to convince her we don’t need them. Our cocktail hour with fruit and cheese will be at 5:00, dinner 6:00, cake cutting 7ish, and the reception ends at 10:00. Definitely enough food going through the evening hahaha! Definitely agree with other PPs - it’s not necessary and if you don’t have the budget, no need to worry.

Jennifer, you do not have to provide snacks for them. I’m only going to provide a hot chocolate bar, after the ceremony, while we take pictures. They can eat, when it’s time for them to eat. No one should be attending a wedding hungry or looking for food. They can eat a snack, before they get there. If it’s not in your budget, that’s okay.

So long as dinner is a full meal you should be just fine. This is especially true if you will have snacks or appetizers durring cocktail hour! Don't sweat it.

You’re definitely not the only one! Ultimately the wedding is a celebration of love between you and your partner. Chances are guests will be more focused on the dancing and drinks or desserts and cookies that you mentioned.
