Last Minute Marriage License

Eden, on August 5, 2010 at 2:21 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

Ok I'm getting married in DE and the requirement is to get one no sooner than 1 month before the wedding. Great, I don't think they meant for that to mean "the very last minute". FH and I live in CT so it's a pain to get down to DE especially because FH has no more time off after all is said and done. And they're closed on weekends!!!

He wants to get it Friday, the day before the wedding. I was kind of freaking out about it. Is that even possible? What if something happens and it takes a while!? He won't be in DE until late Thursday, though...and it will be closed by then so Fiday is about our only option. Smiley sad

You can't get it the day before the wedding. In Delaware there is a 96 hour waiting period for non residents.

In my state there is a mandatory 3 day waiting period between when you apply and when you get the license. I would check to see if they have a rule like this.

This site says that if you are not a Delaware resident, there is a four-day waiting period after getting a marriage license before you can get married. You really need to find a way to get to Delaware before the Friday immediately preceding the wedding.

You could call one of the listed offices and find out whether any waiver of the four-day waiting period. (I know there was in MA when we got married.) But you really want to figure this out soon.

Also check to see if it is a cash only deal. We had to pay either with cash or a cashier's check - so don't show up with a credit card or check book!

Yes you have to consider the waiting period (in MD it's 48 hours). SMH y'all need to be on top of this!

You have to apply for the marriage license in the state in which you are getting married in. It doesn't matter if you live in that state or not. Delaware sounds like it requires for you to apply for the marriage license at least 4 days before the marriage.

    Good Luck!!

Even worse - it looks like the requirements may be different in different counties in Delaware!

Another option if it's easier is to get legally married in CT (either before or after the fact) - http://marriage.about.com/cs/marriagelicenses/p/connecticut.htm

you'd still have the ceremony/wedding as is. just have the judge sign off on it later in CT....where there's no waiting period!
