Last minute challenges

Aliyah, on March 24, 2022 at 12:12 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 23

Hello everyone! Joined this site really late in the game (my wedding is 2 weeks from Saturday)...but I need some help.

A [good] wrench was recently thrown into the works. In the way of two pink lines. This is news that we want to keep on the down-low during the wedding and the very first thing that popped into my head is that obviously, I can't drink. I was never really a big drinker as it was, but I still did enough that people would probably notice if I wasn't. My fiancé and my MOH are the only ones who know I'm pregnant. We should be able to get away with telling our bartender I can't have alcohol and have drinks made that "look like" but aren't, right?

My other big concern is that I'm having AWFUL morning sickness. I'm basically living on ginger because it's been keeping my stomach somewhat settled. I've been debating changing my dinner option as well because I think the pasta might be easier on my stomach.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy! But the timing...umm...oops! Is there anything else I should look into to keep this quiet?

The good news is that most people don’t pay attention to or care what you are drinking. Those who are nosy don’t belong in attendance. Drink whatever you like and don’t worry about anyone’s opinions on the matter.

Congratulations!! And yes - I think notifying the bartender ahead of time would be a great idea. They can certainly make non-alcoholic drinks that look like they have alcohol in them. If there's a champagne toast planned, you could have them pour sparkling grape juice into your glass. You could also carry around a half full bottle of beer or whatever beverage (but never drink from it, or just pretend to drink from it). I agree with Michelle that most people don't really pay attention to what other people are drinking.

You can also say things like "i'm trying to not drink too much, I want to remember everything about the day" if people ask if you want a drink.

Thank you! Since ginger has been my lifeline so far, I'll just let the bartender know and say that ginger ale will be my drink of choice. Haha maybe throw a lime in there or something.

My fiancé said he'll keep mints and ginger candies in his pockets, so between that and the ginger ale, I'm hoping that keeps the morning sickness at bay since there are days where it likes to last all day.

If you have a planner they can get all your drinks and handle it. If you are having a seated dinner, you will typically have a waiter specifically for you two/your head table, who you can tell and they will handle it as well. Some good choices to "pretend" you are drinking are:

    ginger ale in champagne glass

tonic/sprite with lemon juice and lemon wedge (sparkling lemon drop)

tonic/sprite with cranberry (vodka soda cran)

If you are a beer drinker: Dark glass bottle that you dump out and fill with water

Came here to suggest ginger ale lol. One of my coworkers had exactly that situation with her son. His sister was in on it, so she was in charge of the bride's drinks. If anyone had asked about why the sister was getting ginger ale, she just said it was her drink. If they asked why the sister was getting the bride's drinks, it was to let the bride enjoy her day while making sure she stayed hydrated. Their mom doesn't miss ANYTHING, and she had no idea. Another one of my friends was also in that situation, and I had no clue until they made the announcement. I'm sure you'll be able to keep it a secret Smiley smile congratulations!

Congratulations! My SIL had the same thing happen. She is a tee-totaler anyway so they were already planning to toast with sparkling grape juice.

Ginger ale or ginger beer are both great options for your go-to drink. Ginger beer can be mixed with something like fruit juice or grenadine (if you want the illusion of holding a mixed drink) and it has a much stronger ginger flavor. Experiment beforehand and you can tell the bartender exactly what you want so you know it will be something you like and will also soothe your stomach.

First of all, congratulations!!! I would just tell anyone who inquires the classic excuse "No on likes a drunk bride!" and that you're trying not to be hungover the next day. I also agree with ginger ale or some sparkling water with a lemon or lime. Will soothe your stomach throughout the night and can look like champagne or a mixed drink.

Definitely agree with the ginger ale/ginger beer route. Or any other low flavored sparkling substance. Club soda/soda water are used in a lot of cocktails as is, and you drinking that wouldn't look weird at all. Certainly wouldn't scream "pregnant!"

If you're having a small purse (or if your dress has pockets!) I would suggest throwing some ginger type things in there (ginger candies etc) to pop every now and again if you're feeling nauseous. Also perhaps talk to your doctor about any anti nausea things you can take before hand to help?

Honestly, I wouldn't stress too much. If I saw a bride not drinking and/or popping pepto tablets at the wedding my first thought would be nerves, not pregnancy.

    1st congrats!
I’m 14 weeks and still suffering from morning sickness. I’ve been taking B6 (every 6-8 hours) and Unisom at night. It helps some.
It got bad this week and my dr called me in a prescription for zofran. It’s been helpful. Also eating small snacks every hour or so is helpful and staying hydrated. Most people won’t notice you’re not drinking. I wouldn’t “pretend” I was with fake drinks. You can always just say you want to stay present today so I’m not drinking.

Hmm Zofran actually doesn't sound like a bad idea. I'll talk to my doctor about it!

Definitely talk to your doctor about the morning/all day sickness, there are medications that can help for sure! Congrats on the news! Have a great wedding.

Thanks! Yeah, I agree! I'm hoping there's someone out there who can tell me it won't be this bad the whole time (even if they don't mean it, I want to hear it 😂)! Haha give me some hope at least 😂

    Oh congratulations!!! How exciting!!

Another suggestion is you and FH could get insulated tumblers that say Mr and Mrs on them and then no one would know what you're drinking at all! My friend did that for her wedding because he in-laws are religiously opposed to drinking and didn't want pictures of them holding alcoholic beverages 🤷🏼‍♀️

I love all the suggestions about keeping ginger candies in your pocket/clutch! And ginger beer/ginger ale honestly might look enough like champagne for your toast! My fiance hates the taste of champagne, so we're getting one bottle of sparkling grape juice for him to toast with 😅

    Congrats!
I’m not sure how you feel about gum, but tictac gum was my savior for just nausea in general. I wasn’t throwing up much and I think it was due to living on that gum and lemon wedges.
Virgin Moscow mules are requested at my work potlucks every since I introduced them. Ginger beer, lime seltzer, lime juice. They can even put them in the bronze cup with a lime wedge on it to make it look extra authentic.
Most people won’t know what you are or aren’t drinking, but a garnish or sugar around the rim of a glass will likely fool people. 🍹
