Large ballroom, smallish wedding?

Mrs. Jjb, on September 16, 2017 at 3:24 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

Hi folks, my venue can accommodate 250-300 people I'm guessing but we only plan to have 100 tops, that could drop as far down as 75 depending on RSVPs.

I'm wondering if we will be dwarfed in such a large room. Has anyone had a smaller wedding in a large venue? The girl who booked it didn't think we would be but I keep thinking about it.

There will undoubtedly be unused space on one side of the room, I'll ask them to move the tables a little further from the dance floor but I'm trying to come up with other uses for that space. Think anyone will even notice?

Have any of you had or been to a wedding where you noticed the room was much larger than needed?

Where I'm from, one of the only local venues is a ballroom. Most receptions are held there after a church wedding. Tables are on one side with a huge dance floor, so the DJ/dancing are pretty far from the tables. That being said, even if it is a small or large wedding, I haven't really ever thought "they should've picked a different place" due to the size. I don't think you have to worry at all.

We were going to have to do this. We're at about 65 and most of the venues in our area are ballrooms. I hated the idea of having all this open space. Luckily I found something more accommodating.

When we went to my venue, the coordinator said that you have to think about how many tables you will have and how they will look around the dance floor. A large ballroom will not only look very empty, the sound and music will echo a lot and sound really bad. The room has to fit the party not the other way around

I would personally look into other venues and see if you fall in love with something else.

Our ballroom I think was quoted up to 150. We had 55 attend. Don't forget tables accommodate different numbers. Ours could seat 10-12 people. (12 would have been really crowded). Ask your venue to spread our seating a little (10 people instead of 12) and add an extra few tables. We also had buffet so by the time the buffet tables were added and the DJ and our photo both it was fine. I actually liked that it was more spread out. I've been to weddings where you couldn't walk between tables because of the chairs.

ETA: when we saw our venue they had 12 tables set up. We only had 6 at the wedding.

Could you add some tall cocktail tables around the dance floor to take up some space and offer a place for guests to set their drinks while they're dancing/watching others dance?

Maybe add a lounge area like with sofas and tables if you can....if not I would look for another venue...pictures will make it seem like it is half empty.

We looked at a venue like that. I think it held 250. They told me we could have tables of 8 to fill the space.. They also had room seperater to make 2 smaller rooms but still looked way to big.

Our ceremony is in the garden area of our venue but the reception is under the tent which can hold 125. We have a count of 55. Our event decorator strategically laid out the table design, dance floor, draping, and lighting so as to not make the space look like it was swallowing my event. I am eager to see how it looks once the professional pics are in.

We will have the same issue, so we are doing 6 to a table instead of 8

I don't think it's a big deal. I'm thankful my venue has two rooms for receptions so we booked the smaller room which still holds 125 people, and we're expecting about 70

I had 115 people in a room that could fit 300. We just had a mix of different tables, rounds and long tables, and it helped with the spacing. Also, our event manager had the dance floor rotated so it was more a diamond shape compared to the room so it sort of took up more of the floor space.

We will figure it out. I feel like we will have plenty of space and room to move around/dance. We are also having a candy buffet so we will set that up so there will be plenty of space to move around in that area.

I would see about draping across the room/floor to ceiling to bring the room in a bit. Also, like PP mentioned...if you have 72" rounds, seat 8 chairs instead of 10 per table. We have 2 adjoining rooms that can hold 240; but we only have ~95 guests. We are using the 2nd room as a little lounge/quiet area...not something too comfy; but just a place for folks to get away from the 'party' if they need a break. Other than that...I love having a little more space to walk between tables. I get you don't want a big gap though.

We are having them spread out our tables to not make it look empty

That was my main concern when looking for a venue space.

Does the room have those sliding partitions that can close some sections of the room off?

Cocktail tables, lounge area, less people at each table, bigger dance floor, bigger bar, all good options!
