Lantern Send off?

claire, on April 17, 2012 at 7:01 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

The area we are having our reception is off the highway in the mountains. I've been seeing everyone's cute send off photos and was wondering what everyone thought about a paper lantern send off? I found some that light and float for 15 minutes then flame-out and fall slowly and biodegrade. I was thinking we could do something quick on the overpass really quick. Thoughts?

The last few times I've logged in there has been a post regarding lantern send offs. I think it's a beautiful idea but you need to check the county's fire code. Some areas (especially national parks/mountains/large forests) may have strict rules forbidding actions like this because it could put the land and wildlife in danger.

After you get the go-ahead from the county fire department, you can check out this website for the lanterns:

We are using them. I don't want to use them as a send off because we are doing sparklers for that, but I'm thinking we'll use them right after the toasts. I've seen a couple of websites, and they are on the expensive side. Also, they tend to not work very well if its really windy out.

Sorry I don't have the link but there was a Groton for them today. 10 for $25 or 20 for $40. I haven't priced them bc I know we can't do them where we are having our wedding. I'll try to find the link.

    Here you go: http://www.groupon.com/deals/gg-chinese-sky-lanterns?c=all&p=12

Again, haven't priced them so I don't know if that's a good deal or not.

I've shot 2 weddings using these. They're very pretty. A few words of advice once you get the okay from the fire dept. You will need to have them all unpackaged, fluffed, & ready to go with quite a few people designated as "lighters" / "teachers".

At the wedding I shot this past weekend, there weren't enough candle lighters so only 2 or 3 lanterns could be lit at one time (with only 2 people having an available lighter). Also, people weren't aware that the lanterns needed to fill with hot air before being released, so several lanterns flew about 10 feet on the wind and fell into the water and onto some furniture (think fire!). Having 4 or 5 designated people to light the lanterns and give instructions while they light them would make it flow smoothly so that several lanterns could be released at once...making for a beautiful moment to see & photograph!

I thought about doing this but my venue was not okay with it as they would need the fire marshal's consent and they were terrified of a negative result, i.e. a home catching on fire. Smiley sad

I would really like to do those but we are doing a sparkler send off so I wasn't sure when else to do the lanterns. Any good ideas for good timing to light & release the lanterns? Also, should just the wedding party do them or all guests? How may do people usually order for weddings so that it looks cool & lights up the sky?
