Lantern HELP!

Rachael, on December 8, 2014 at 12:06 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 11

I purchased three wooden lanterns from Pottery Barn for the head table at my wedding. FI and I are in the process of purchasing candles for all of the lanterns, and he brought up a really good point... Wooden lantern an open flame candle = potential safety disaster. It's weird, because on PB's website, they actually try to up-sell you with real candles. So I'd assume it'd be fine. But I went to Yankee Candle tonight and found three pillars encased in glass. Here's a picture of what it looks like when the candle is lit inside the lantern. I did cut the wick down a little bit, just so that it wasn't as high. Do you think this is okay? Last thing I need to do is burn my venue down. Help!

I think it will be fine. Especially if you have the glass candles inside. If you are really worried you could make sure that the inside is coated in wax to prevent burning.

These are gorgeous lanterns! I do see your point though. I just don't know the answer to this one. Maybe contact PB and ask them directly? I see Andrea mentioned coating the inside with wax...maybe Google that.

@Monica So I actually did call PB and they had no info for me! They literally couldn't tell me one way or the other...

What is your venues policy on candles? Ours specifically states in the contract no open candles, but candles in water (floating candles) are allowed.

In would think that pb wouldn't suggest real candles because they don't want to be held liable.

Is the whole thing wood, other than the glass? I have seen similar ones where the top is part metal.

I would recommend burning a candle for a while and keeping and eye on it, with fire extinguisher. Then after an hour or so, blow out the candle and see if the inside feels too hot or is burnt. You can alway use frameless candles.

I don't know if this would help but I would try a shorter glass candles only because they will burning for a few hours inside of the lantern...

@Natalie The frame is wood, but the very top is aged metal. The top got hot just from burning a candle inside to take this pic.

@Rhonda Our venue doesn't allow open-flame either, but what they consider open-flame is literally a pillar just sitting out somewhere. The candles I'm planning to put in these lanterns are encased in glass, so technically, it's not open-flame. My venue allows candles in hurricanes, votives, etc.

If the top gets super hot, I would also worry about someone burning themselves. Even though these will be at the head table, usually once dinner is over and the party begins, it s a bit of a free-for-all. I agree with nicikola that if you are going to use real candles, then try shorter/smaller ones (so that the flame is further from the top and hopefully less hot/less dangerous overall.

Or you can try flameless candles. You'd be surprised how nice they look! and inside of lanterns, no one will even really be able to tell the difference.

I'm actually not worried about the top of the lantern getting hot. I think that's what happens when you burn candles in lanterns. I took out the lanterns we'll be putting on the guest tables and am burning a candle in there, and the top of that one gets hot too. We're having a small wedding with mostly family. I don't think I'll have to worry about adults burning themselves. At least I hope not. And it's not red hot.

I'd definitely get LED candles. There are some very nice looking ones, and then you don't have to worry about any safety concerns.
