Laid back, inexpensive honeymoon ideas

Katelyn, on May 19, 2016 at 12:27 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 19

Hey everyone. We are having a really low key wedding, but I would still really love to get away somewhere for a few days. FH has never been on a plane, so I think it would be fun to fly somewhere. We aren't into beaches. We prefer hiking, camping, mountain type vacations. It would definitely have to be on the cheaper end of the scale. We live in Maryland, so we have been to PA and VA. Does anyone have any recommendations. The pic is from the day he proposed on skyline drive in VA Smiley smile

Tennessee was on my radar Smiley smile I think I may have passed through there on my road trip back from Texas, but I didn't spend any time there. I feel like the food will be amazing there Smiley smile

We went on a cruise, but originally planned to go to Savannah GA and surrounding area. It looks to be beautiful there and could be a laid back relaxing honeymoon. It is still on our bucket list!

We are going to Tybee Island. Not really so much for the beach, because we aren't beach people. But we can easily do a day or 2 in Savannah. There's lots of cheap stuff.

We are renting a condo from VRBO.com. One of the reasons we chose that one is because the reviews had several people saying they sat on the balcony and watched dolphins. We are going just to sit back and relax, not so much the beach

I would love Colorado, but I'm afraid it's going to be an expensive trip.

Georgia sounds nice, too. We would most likely be going in September and I am not a fan of the heat, though. Had anyone waited a few weeks - a month to honeymoon. We may have more luck in October.

Gatlinburg! But if you have it in the budget you should go to Breckinridge, CO. My favorite place in the entire world

We're staying in a cabin in Asheville NC for a week. It's a bit weirder than the Gatlinburg area, but that's what I like about it. Amazing food, and lots of hiking and exploring to be done. Plus a couple of phenomenal spas! You could also look in the Hot Springs or Highlands area (both also Western NC). ETA: Asheville in September is wonderful. Nice weather (still warm during the day with nice cool nights) and the leaves are changing at high elevations.

NH has some beautiful shorter mountains...Washington is a decently challenging gorgeous hike, and Chocorua is an unreal half day climb with a waterfall partway up. There are a bucket of other mountain hikes, plus some great trail hiking and camping. If you rock climbing at all, Pawtuckaway State Park has incredible bouldering, and Rumney is famous for the lead climbing.

You guys are giving me some great options! I will definitely have to check all of these out more in depth. They all sound so nice and relaxing. Plus plane tickets should be fairly cheap to Tennessee or Georgia Smiley smile

I would recommend Asheville as well. It is beautiful in the Fall. I would check out the Biltmore Estate, Wicked Weed Brewery, Lexington Avenue Brewery, Curate for a nice dinner, Biscuit Head for a delicious brunch, and lots of hiking!

There's so many amazing hikes in VA! Have y'all gone to Crab Tree Falls? High Bridge Trail? Both are highly recommended.

Look up Lake of the Clouds in MI. It is part of the porcupine mountains. There are about 12 different rustic cabins you can hike too. I have been many times and stayed at a few different cabins. Lake of the clouds is awesome. Its about 1.5 mile hike down the mountain to a cute little cabin. You get the whole lake to yourself and it comes with a canoe and row boat. When we went we did a week and stayed at three different cabins. There is no electricity or running water to shower with. Just an outhouse and rivers and lakes to clean up in but it is awesome. Ill attach a few pictures for you. The first one is Gitchgumee cabin to give you an idea of what the cabins look like. The second it the river that is right next to the cabin. We hiked about 3 miles down it one day and its very secluded. The last picture is Lake of the clouds before the hike to give you an idea of the lake you would have all to your self

What about somewhere in New England? Mystic, CT is my favorite place in the whole world. It's so beautiful, there's a ton to do, a bunch of great restaurants and a laid back environment. There's also Cape cod, Newport RI, and tons of beautiful places in New Hampshire, Vermont, or Maine!

ETA: Totally just saw that you're not into beaches. I got too excited and posted before I read the whole thing Smiley smile But still, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine are great for what you are looking for!

Ski towns in CO are much cheaper in between ski season // mountain biking season

We stayed at the Marriott in Vail with free parking in the city for $135 a night and they upgraded us to suite since no one was there so we had a working fireplace and mini kitchen. That was last weekend.

So I wouldn't rule out CO.

You would need to rent a car to get out to the mountains from the Denver airport to a ski town. Or it would be a pretty long drive from Maryland!

Also an option is some of the hot springs here like mount Princeton hot springs which is under a couple hundred a night. Or the ski town steamboat springs has strawberry springs.

OMG you are in the perfect situation to nab a great deal! I'm a backcountry addict but I love it all from day hike to car camping to epic wilderness adventures. I'm also a long term traveler (I work part time remotely). I could name a kizillion places you would love but my advice to you is to scope out travel deals and let the best deal guide you. You could have an amazing trip if you leave the destination open and let the best deals guide you. Often it is less expensive to fly across the country than to go somewhere close by. If you look for package deals you can do less price comparison and know that you got a deal on both airfare and lodging.

A few general ideas to consider - glamping (never done it but it seems perfect for an outdoorsy couples' honeymoo) National Park Lodges, National Forest service cabins (some total deals here if you are willing to self cater...imagine sleeping in a real bed, with electricity and a full kitchen but right on hiking trails with no neighbors - it's true, start at recreation.gov).

Might specifically consider: Nevada, southern Utah, Montana (Kalispell), Washington (Olympic or cascades NPs), Arizona (Prescott), New Mexico (Four Corners), Maine, Colorado (Durango is often cheaper), Northern California...

Seriously to want to (a) get on a plane and (b) be totally flexible about what laid back destination chooses you. A dream!
