Shariyahmom, on January 22, 2020 at 1:00 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21
Im trying to decide how do I pick my fiance ring. Our wedding is in May but I want to start buying stuff now. The ring is major expense that I don't want going into the marriage.

I would let him choose his own wedding band. That's what my FH and I did.

There are inexpensive rings. Even if you went with a traditional gold band, they can be found for under $200. See, for example, this one:

Compared to the cost of a wedding, that's not a "major expense." But if even that is too much, you could look at less expensive metals.

And yes, I agree that he should choose his own. You could set a budget, or he could pay for it himself.

My FH loves whiskey, so I found a company that embeds whiskey barrels into their rings. I chose a couple I liked and asked FH which he liked best, then ordered that one.

Why don’t you ask him to help you pick?

I sent him many photos of the ring I wanted before he popped the question so I'm letting him choose his.

My FH was adamant about a plain gold band, so we got him one from Zalea for 200 dollars. They even had plenty of styles for him to try on. I would drag him into a store to at least get a feel for what he likes.

Also, we had our rings purchased in November for our April wedding, so you're not alone in getting things done early.

We went shopping for our bands together. He got to try stuff on because he had no clue what he’d like on his hand. He chose something we both thought was nice and I paid for it. We did that in December and we get married next month. His band already arrived but we’re still waiting on mine.

My FH and I picked ours out together. He bought his on Amazon for like $25! He's not a jewelry person, so he didn't want to spend more than $50 on a ring. It's nice and simple.

I thought about surprising my husband with a ring but it seemed like too much stress so we went ring shopping together and he picked what he wanted. I’m glad we did that because it’s not at all what I would have picked.

I’m really glad we went together. My husband was visualizing something black and kinda boxy looking, like this:
ladies help Me!!! How do i pick his ring??? 2
Whereas I had a more classic vision like this:
ladies help Me!!! How do i pick his ring??? 3

He (with my help lol) ended up picking something that was actually a pretty perfect combination of the two 😂ladies help Me!!! How do i pick his ring??? 4

I picked out a few rings that went together well with mine and then let him choose which one he liked best.

Talk to him about what he wants in a ring. Maybe look at some options together and see what he likes. We went into a few stores to try things on and get a feel for what we liked before we were really ready to commit to buying. I don’t think my husband had particularly strong feelings before but once he started putting rings on, he was able to come up with a very specific lists of wants, including a particular width and texture and edging, so I’m glad we really shopped around before choosing anything!

I think he should choose his own ring.

My FH never wears jewelry and I'm not sure he had ever even put on a ring before. Originally he was going to go with an alternative band but alternative material rings are much deeper (thicker from inside to outside) than precious metal rings and when he tried them on he found them to feel really bulky and uncomfortable. He ended up choosing a brushed medium weight white gold band. It was more expensive than what we originally budgeted, but he felt really comfortable with it and it looked great on him. He had definite opinions about what he did and didn't like, and he will be the one wearing it for the rest of his life, so it made sense to have him be the one to make the final decision.

We also had try on rings or get sized probably 4x before we decided on what size to order him. Since finger size fluctuates, we wanted to make sure we had a good average and weren't just ordering him a ring based on a "skinny finger day" or a "fat finger day".

We each bought our own rings. As far as we are concerned the rings are just part of our wedding budget, and we are paying for things together so it wasn't important that I bought him his ring and he bought me mine.
