Lack of Representation at our Venue

My husband and I started following our wedding venue on Instagram and Facebook months before we got married. Every day we loved to see the pictures they posted of couples who had just gotten married at their location. The day of our wedding we patiently waited to see what they were going to post from our wedding and to our surprise, they didn't post anything! When we reached out to them to ask them about it they said they were waiting for the edited photos from our photographer but would post our candy bar and signature drink in the meantime. We thought that was interesting because we could clearly tell that many of the pictures they had posted on their page were taken on a cell phone. Nonetheless, we said okay and sent them pictures from our wedding once our photographer made edits. It has been about a month and they haven't posted one picture of us during our wedding at their venue. We are beginning to feel that they do not want to represent black people on their page. What are your thoughts?

Thank you for you response. It's really said that in 2019 many companies have this mentality that anything associated with people of color is not desirable or worth being displayed. Your wedding will be beautiful regardless. ❤️

I looked it up for context too after reading that. I’d just point out that the US as a whole is something like 12% African American and that particular town has basically a 0% African American population. I’d suggest considering that only 8-10% of the venues’ weddings involve African Americans and the pictures accurately represent their clients.

I'm glad you did your research but unfortunately you are still incorrect. Did you get married at Blue Heron Pines Golf Club? Have you ever been there? Even if there was one black couple, which there is not, one is not good enough. The venue does not display enough diversity and after speaking to the manager he agrees with me. In addition, this conversation is about people of color not the LGBTQ community so that comment was off topic. Statements such as "representation is absolutely present" is why we can't unite racially as a country. I'm not here to argue with anyone though. Have a great day, I will not be responding to any more of your comments.

Wow, this is great data to take into consideration. I spoke to the manager and according to him a few couple's of color have been married there this year. Unfortunately they are not shown.

Update: Last week I spoke to the general manager about this concern and today my wedding venue posted a picture of my husband and I on their Instagram page. Hopefully that's one step in the direction of inclusivity and representation of black and brown people at their location. Only time will tell.

I’m sorry this happened to you. I would put them on blast on social media if they don’t respond adequately to your valid concern. Congrats on your big day!!

I’m sorry this happened and sadly I’m not surprised in south NJ. I was seriously about to schedule a tour with them but I think I’ll pass. I’m glad you enjoyed your day!

I never intended to put them on blast, I just want to make them more aware. I'm assuming positive intent and that they are not purposely not representing black and brown people. But only time will really tell now that they have been informed.

I grew up in South Jersey and I think its a pretty diverse place which is why I was surprised about the lack of representation. I would tour with them but bring up the representation concern. It really is a good value. They include the wedding cake, table centerpieces, food, etc.

Lol. If you do the tour you will most likely meet with Tara who is amazing. I really did think it was a beautiful venue. Try it out for yourself.

Glad they did post you guys. Unfortunately it took a call to the general manager for it to happen. When we (mostly me lol) were looking at venues and vendors, we looked for people who have had interracial couples or just black/brown couples. So far we love them all!

I just hope that they didn't post us because they thought that would make us happy. It's not about posting us. It's about posting black and brown people that have weddings at their venue. Representation matters.

Do you live in the tri-state? My makeup artist represents all brides and I love that about her!

I'm not trying to say there isn't prejudice or play down your experience but to bring in another point that I don't think has been raised yet.

I'm assuming you're in America, in which case the majority of people are white. I don't know the exact statistics but I'm guessing between 70-80% are white.

The average household income is significantly higher for white people than black people. I'm guessing a country club venue isn't cheap so if the average income is higher, they'll be more likely to be able to afford it.

So part the reason might be that there are significantly more white people getting married there
