Lack of Representation at our Venue

My husband and I started following our wedding venue on Instagram and Facebook months before we got married. Every day we loved to see the pictures they posted of couples who had just gotten married at their location. The day of our wedding we patiently waited to see what they were going to post from our wedding and to our surprise, they didn't post anything! When we reached out to them to ask them about it they said they were waiting for the edited photos from our photographer but would post our candy bar and signature drink in the meantime. We thought that was interesting because we could clearly tell that many of the pictures they had posted on their page were taken on a cell phone. Nonetheless, we said okay and sent them pictures from our wedding once our photographer made edits. It has been about a month and they haven't posted one picture of us during our wedding at their venue. We are beginning to feel that they do not want to represent black people on their page. What are your thoughts?

Thank you for your response. I agree with you. They may think that displaying a black couple would invite more black clients and I guess we're not who they are trying to appeal to. It saddens me that we're still treated as second class citizens.

Thank you for your response. Hopefully more couple's will speak up and that will lessen this disparity. Black people get married too.

Thank you for your response. I believe we don't represent the clients they want to market their business to so they do not want to put us up on their pages. It's real unfortunate for them because I had a beautiful wedding that represented their business in a beautiful manner.

Thank you for your response. I wish I had been more thoughtful about representation when I selected my venue. The deed is already done but the least I can do is bring awareness to it now.

Thank you for your response. Prior to the wedding I hadn't gone back past a month on their social media but since then but I have. Unfortunately I only saw one black man who married a white woman and an Asian man who married a white woman.

Can you go on the online yellow page site and upload pictures to that. Sorry it may be a stupid idea and I get it is not the same nor does it make a wrong right.

I'm not sure if I could do that but I don't think I should have to either. I think companies have an obligation to represent diversity.

It’s weird to me from a business standpoint that they wouldn’t want to show that they work with all types of couples. I’m not going to work with a hair and makeup artist who doesn’t work with other WOC, because just because you can do white girls hair doesn’t mean you can do mine. Same with photographer – can they make everyone look good with different skin tones? Even the planner, it would be nice to know they can adapt to different cultures and traditions

So I did a little research prior to replying. I think you’re overreacting a bit. It’s possible that they just didn’t like your wedding photos. I snooped through their Instagram and Facebook page. Their insta for weddings is mostly venue pics. But in the last 6 months they absolutely have posted photos of POC getting married there, more than a handful since January. Their Facebook page doesn’t really show weddings but they’ve posted a few photos of their black male golfers very recently as well. I get being salty that your wedding wasn’t featured but please don’t go on a rampage for this venue unnecessarily.

This is a real, ongoing issue in the wedding industry. My engagement shoot photographer, although a lovely lady did not post ONE picture of our engagement shoot on any of her social media platforms. I was so, so, hurt as I thought our session was creative and fun (her style). She does like creative and fun couples just not POC who are that. At least thats what I took from her posts and lack of diversity. Needless to say, she is NOT hired for the wedding.

And it hurts, so OP I understand. I hope you sent a message over to your venue. I hope they listen to your concerns and take them seriously as in this climate being “exclusive” is not the best idea for business.

Really all you can do is put it in reviews on Yelp, WeddingWire, TheKnot, etc. and see if they respond to that. You can also reach out to them with how you're feeling. Issues like this are common but also it could be a case of mismanagement on their end. Regardless, I'm sorry you've felt this way. I know it's the little things that can matter to us and if you were looking forward to this, for it to not happen, I'm sorry about the disappointment that caused. But I'm sure there are so many other high points and happier things to focus on in this new season of life. I wish you all the best.

I have no suggestions to add but I am so sorry you’re going through this! Your pictures look beautiful and I really hope this doesn’t taint the special memories you have from your wedding.

Thank you for your response. I left a review for them on several forums and have a phone call with the manager coming up. My wedding was still the best day of my life!
