KWR: Teeth Whitening *Pain*

Nikki, on September 28, 2015 at 11:35 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

So I just got my teeth whitened for my wedding at my dentist's office. I'd say we finished up an hour and a half ago. My teeth look noticeably whiter. BUT apparently I have really sensitive teeth and I am having a really hard time right now. Unless I breathe super slowly and gently, I am in severe pain in what feels like the core of several teeth. The air that I am breathing in makes them that sensitive! I took an ibuprofen at the office and a few Advil when I got home but it doesn't seem to be doing anything at all.

Has anyone else had this after a teeth whitening? How did you LIVE??? I like the whiter teeth, but honestly I would never do this again. BTW I have been seeing this dentist nearly four years and everything else with them has been great.

I've never heard of anyone having an enjoyable time having their teeth whitened at the dentist. I have a top and bottom tray and use gel the dentist gave me to slowly whiten for this reason. Plus I can keep up with whitening them when they start to yellow again. I drink a lot of coffee....

My mom had hers whitened for the wedding. She was extreme pain after. Her words exactly, "I was cursing like a sailor the whole way home from the dentist whenever the air hit my teeth." But it got better. She resorted to pain meds the dentist gave her, but only for the first 24-48 hours.

    ETA grammar and spelling

    I should be sleeping!!

This is exactly why I did NOT do teeth whitening at the dentist..I can't deal with that. I sort of wish I had suffered through it because my teeth were not as white as I wanted, but oh well. Hope you feel better!!!

I have sensitive teeth as well, have you tried oil pulling? With coconut oil? Doesn't hurt at all it just takes a lot longer and doesn't give as dramatic of results

Sounds exactly like the time I accidentally fell asleep with my Crest White Strips on... I was in agonizing pain/sensitivity hell for two days after. I can tell you only time heals the sensitivity; I'm sorry you have to go through this! It's a really good thing you didn't do it the day before your wedding. Hang in there and as other ladies have said, do something that whitens teeth gradually instead.

I've never had it done at the dentist, but every time I try to use at home whitening this happens after a couple days. I have no advice, sadly, but I can commiserate.

I have pretty sensitive teeth and for that reason I only use the home strips maybe once a month but the Hygenist I get my teeth cleaned with recommended sliding Sensodyne toothpaste a few days prior and a few days after using the strips and it really works for me!

I got a teeth whitening kit from my dentist and I had the same problem! So annoying! I even tried coating them in Sensodyne.

Michelle - have you tried the Crest white strips before? If you don't fall asleep with them on, do they still leave your teeth feeling sensitive?

Oh no!! Now I'm super worried about getting mine whitened at the dentist. Have you tried sensodine toothpaste? I've heard that helps.

Got mine done about a year ago. That day was the WORST. Its not that your teeth are sensitive, its that whitening takes all that junk off so your nerves aren't used to the sensitivity. You'll be good to go by tomorrow

I get really sensitive even with my whitening kit which is custom trays and whitening gel. I can only whiten for 10 minutes at a time and usually have to do every other day. My only advice is don't eat anything acidic for a few days!

I got trays from my dentist to use for the week before my wedding, I ended up using them over about 10 days taking a break every 2 days because of sensitivity. My hygenist also told me to brush with sensodyne toothpaste everytime even before I started the trays and I think that helped. I hope my teeth look whiter in my photos because not drinking coffee for more than a week was a killer.

Thanks ladies! FH actually ended up giving me one of the pain relievers he got when he got his wisdom teeth out last winter so I could sleep last night. I feel a lot better this morning. I feel kind of silly for posting this now, but no one really told me it could be that bad and I hadn't really googled it. I had tried strips before and been fine. I don't want to scare anyone but I found that a reaction like I had isn't all that uncommon.

I have a similar problem on a semi regular basis- sucking air over my teeth would cause pain- I actually switched to sensodyne because of it and it really helped. The other thing is- I get my teeth regularly cleaned- and it really helps keep the coffee stains at bay (the first time I went- it had been a few years) and the actual dentist asked me about 5 times if I smoked because my teeth were so stained from the coffee (pots a day- POTS a day I drink).

It should get better- I feel for you- it's a miserable feeling!

Nikki, don't feel silly for posting it, sensitivity can be extremely painful! I also get extremely sensitive when I get composite (white) fillings. I guess I just have sensitive teeth, probably because my roots are a mile long.

@Chantel Yes, I use the strips often and when I do the recommended time my teeth definitely do still get a bit sensitive... but not even a fraction of how sensitive they got when they were on all night! haha

I've had this happen, especially with the at home kits with the strips. It goes away in a few days.
