KWR: Skinny fingers, big knuckles...Ring dilemma?

Rach, on August 7, 2014 at 10:03 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 25

Among other things, my mother passed down the trait of having long, skinny fingers, but big, bulky knuckles. My knuckle is about a half-size (ring-size) bigger than my actual finger, so getting my rings over my knuckle takes an act of congress, but then they swing once they are on my finger since it's so skinny. Does anyone else have this problem? What have you done?

I currently have a metal ring guard on my ring, so I can make it tighter once it's over my knuckle, but it just looks so cheap to me. Any suggestions?

FH is the same way. He literally has such big knuckles that to get his ring big enough to go over his knuckle it's probably a size if not more bigger than need be. I don't have any suggestions for you! Sorry!!

A ring noodle, you can get them from Claires. They look like macaroni with a split that allow you to place it around your ring. It comes in a bag with array of sizes for about $3.00

Not sure if it will help, but my jeweler sauntered in two little gold beads in mine. I really didn't want to size it, so we went this option. Maybe they could place them strategically where you could get in on over you knuckle but still add some snugness.

I have a rubber/clear plastic ring guard on mine. I can't even feel it. I never know it's there. Sure it's ugly but it's what I gotta do! Smiley sad I also cannot have mine sized anymore b/c of the diamonds on the side. I would be willing to jam it on my finger with vegetable oil or soap on a cold day and never take it off if they would make it into a size 4 or 4.5 but they say they cannot do this!

I have the same problem from playing volleyball and basketball I've wound up with fat knuckles. Don't keep the metal guard on, switch over to a snuggie (or ring noodle as Mrs. Valentine suggested). I've heard them called snuggies- I have to wear one with my E-ring. After the wedding I'm planning on getting my wedding band soldered to E-ring & hoping I won't need a snuggie anymore.

Thanks, everyone! I have tried the ring noodles from Claires before, but it was too big and bulky for my preference and it kept bothering me.

@Ashleigh, I saw some articles about the "sizing beads" when I googled it, and it looks like something that may work. A lot of people on other forums said it still let the ring go over the knuckle, but the beads kept it from sliding. I am going to see the jeweler today, so I'm definitely going to ask if he can do it.

I have the same problem, I had to have bumps (some people call them beads) added to my ring.

I have the same problem. My knuckles are a half size bigger and my ring rotated a lot. Since there are small diamonds on the band I couldn't re size it without the risk of making them loose in place. I went to a small jewelry repair shop and they added two gold beads in the band sides. They said it may hurt till I get used to it- but it doesn't! It has been two months and I am very happy. I paid $30 for the two gold dots. I highly recommend it!

I know of a woman with this same issue. She took her rings to a jeweler and they added a locking mechanism to her band. It has a little key that "opens it" then you pass it over your knuckle and then "lock" it. The extra metal folds into the band when you close it and you can't tell other than a teeny little hole for the key. It's certainly not a cheap option, but it would be a great permanent solution to your issue.

I have the beads too. They are also sometimes called arthritis beads. They are great!

I have the same problem. I don't worry about it though. Since I grew up with it and have always had rings, I tend to play with the bottoms of the rings CONSTANTLY which always lets me know if it is out of place. The only thing I'm worried about a little bit is my wedding band since it will be a channel setting and flat. I won't know if it flips over unless I look, but even then, it's not that big of a deal.

I have this very same problem. I have little balls put in and it no longer swings. Hurts like bell getting it on, but stays put once it's on.

@Melissa, I'm almost like you...I'm kind of used to it. But, if there's another option, I may look into it. I'll talk to the jeweler this afternoon and decide.

Thank you for all the suggestions!

First, I had a flat piece of metal added to the inside of the shank. It was only attached at one end -- like a diving board. It flattened when I slid the ring over my knuckle and then sprang out to keep the ring snug. After a while, that broke off from all the bending. Then I had the sizing beads added. Ring has fit fine ever since and doesn't turn the stone to one side.

This is good to know ladies. I may look into it. So far it's been manageable for my chunky knuckles/slim fingers.

This probably won't help but I have the same problem so my FH got a band with a square-ish shape to it. We originally didn't like that shape but the jeweler told us the purpose so when he designed it he decided to get it that way and it is the only ring I've ever worn that doesn't spin! It definitely helps, but not sure if that will help your situation as you'd have to take it to a jeweler to see if they can modify it.

Thank you ladies for this. My daughter has JIA and already her fingers have deformities at the knuckles the Dr's say may never go away. I know it's stupid, because she's only 7, but I have already worried about this for her. A lot of little things some people may never think of have become difficult for her. It's nice to know there are alternatives Smiley smile

The future hubbs had the same problem, had has large knuckles due to sports injuries. When we were picking out our bands the jeweler suggested Superfit. Its kind of genius actually. The rings open up on a hinge so he doesnt have to slide it over his knuckle or anything and it fits perfectly. I was so in love with this idea that im getting it put on my engagement ring.

Hope this helps ladies Smiley smile
