KWR: My ring got a bad scratch! Help!

Kiwi Kawaii, on November 6, 2015 at 8:47 AM Posted in Planning 0 19

11/9 ETA: Apparently I am completely oblivious and my FH did not get my ring at Shane Co. He reminded me after telling him about the scratch that he got my ring somewhere else (he just considered Shane Co). So, I'm going to check with local jewelers like some suggested Smiley tongue

I noticed this morning that my ring has a scratch that seems so terrible to me right on the top of the ring. I have no idea how I did that. I understand that gold is a soft metal and is prone to scratching. I was definitely expecting the really faint scratches to be there over time, but this one is deeper than that.

What do I do? Should I get it polished already (only had it since August)? I know that wears away the gold though, right? It's too early for any kind of rhodium plating isn't it, since the ring is new and there are no other major signs of wear? Is there anything I can do myself?

I'm so angry and sad at the same time. This is why we can't have nice things Smiley sad

Oh no! I can see it! Maybe take it to the jeweler and see if they can buff it out. They should be able to for sure.

I'm no jewelry expert, so I can't really give advice in this area. However, it wouldn't hurt to take it to the jeweler and see what they recommend.

That would drive me batty! Definitely take it to your jeweler & see what they say.

I remember when I scratched my ring for the first time. We were hiking and I wanted to climb onto a big rock... when I got down, I could feel that I damaged the band. I felt so awful! Thankfully, FH was so understanding about it. He said, "well, things like this happen when you wear jewelry 24/7."

It's frustrating to damage such a meaningful piece of jewelry and it's okay to feel terrible about it, but I think my FH was right when he said that these things will happen. I didn't get mine fixed, but I'll probably get it polished right before the wedding to make sure it's nice and shiny for pictures.

They can probably buff it out or re-dip it in gold. It's not a biggie!

Well, at least it sounds like a jewelry should be able to fix it easily. I was just upset when I saw it, because all the time I am thinking "I am basically wearing my fiance's money on my hand everyday." I haven't told him yet, since I didn't see it til I got to work.

As absolutely annoying as it is to look at, I will probably have to hold off until early next year to do anything (some major expenses coming up that I can't avoid).

Thanks for the responses ladies Smiley smile Makes me feel better just to hear any advice and that I can be calm about it.

If you take it to the jeweler that he bought it from, they often do this stuff for free! I just took my ring to our jeweler, and they buff and polish for free any time. They also re-dip it once a year for free!

@JP AP - He actually got it from Shane Co. online, and they don't have a store near us. So, I guess I will have to take it to a local jewelry and see how much it would cost.

ETA: Found out I'm an idiot and don't listen. He DIDN'T get it at Shane Co. lol. The place he got it from doesn't have a warranty like theirs. So, off to the local jewelers for me...

I went to a jewelry store last weekend to look at wedding bands. They offered to clean my e-ring for free even though my ring was purchased online. They might offer to buff yours for free. Just a thought. It doesn't hurt to try. Smiley smile

Bummer! Well honestly, you're probably the only one who notices it...don't sweat it too much!

Easy fix! Mine got scratched while I was lifting weights (I know, I shouldn't wear it while working out), and my jeweler buffed it out super quickly.

Sigh.... :-( I'm so sorry. I've had the same pain recently. I discovered a chip on my stone. SIGH. FH is already talking about getting me a new stone at some point.

I don't know, the Shane & Co website says this:

"We warrant and guarantee the quality of the articles of jewelry for life, as long as you allow only a Shane Co. jeweler to work on the item.

We will also inspect, clean, polish and maintain your jewelry for free for as long as you own it."

I would call them and see about options for it - if you take it somewhere else it will void their warranty.

Oh man.... The first cut is the deepest.... Sorry, I couldn't help it. Fingers crossed it's an easy fix at minimal cost. Wouldn't hurt to take it in to have it looked at. Might not be as expensive as you think. If it is, at least you will know what to budget for early next year :-)

I would mail it so Shane & Co. This way you don't have to worry about voiding any warranty and it will most likely be free.

My local jewelry store (not a chain store like Kay's or something) does all of that kind of stuff for free. So look at local stuff.

@FutureMrs.Davis - I am so glad to hear someone has already had gotten a bad one out! My heart totally sank when I saw it. So, that's a relief.

@WolfWedding2016 - I didn't know that! I assumed that any warranties they had wouldn't apply to online purchases. I should have looked at that in the first place. I'm such a dummy sometimes Smiley tongue Thank you for looking that up. (ETA: Found out it's not from Shane Co. so sadly no warranty for me)

@NenaBear - Yep, fine scratches don't bother me. But this one hurts lol.
