KWR but could be NWR: Is it possible to get pregnant on Mirena?

WeAreOne0822, on October 28, 2014 at 9:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

I'm asking for a friend. Just kidding...I'm asking for myself. I've had mirena for about 4.5 years now and I absolutely love it! No issues whatsoever! It's absolutely stress free bc for me. My period is 5 days late and I am freaking out. I know I need to take a test to rule out the possibility but of course I'm scared! Just checking to see if there are similar stories on here with anyone on it etc?

Edit: spelling...damn iPhone

I have had mine for a year with no problem, but I also don't get my period. I was on a medication, topamax I *think* and after I was on it for a month my PCP was like yea that decreases the mirena effectiveness so you might want to use condoms too. That script went right in the trash. If you are on any meds maybe do a search to see if there are any contraindications.

Well you know what they say, the only way to 100% avoid a pregnancy is abstinence...

I had mirena and hated it. I know my friend had hers and it fell out during sex.

It's probably unlikey that you are, but you never know.

Stress can cause changes in your cycle. But yeah take a test!

Mirena is only good for up to 5 years, right? Maybe it's "wearing out". Not saying that means you're definitely pregnant, but maybe the hormones being released are more spotty now which could also mess with your cycle.

I've had mine for over a year now, no issues.

It's always possible to get pregnant on birth control, both of my children were conceived while I was on the pill.

With that being said, my stepsister has had her Mirena for 4.5 years just like you, she's also having the same issues as you. Her Dr says that as the Mirena gets closer to his expiration date, it starts to fail, aka cycle changes, hormones change, etc etc.

I've had mine for 5 years (getting it replaced in November) without any issues. I haven't had a period though except the odd spotting.

I've never heard of anyone i know personally getting pregnant with it but I am sure it can happen.

ETA: If you are worried why not just take a test?

I've heard of people getting pregnant with it.

I also had a friend who had it sift through her uterine wall or something like that.

I'd go see the doctor, rather than taking a pregnancy test at this point just to be 100% sure.

Just take a test. Asking an internet forum won't really get you the information you need that a pregnancy test can provide.

Yup. I've actually recently heard more IUD failure stories than any other type of BC. If you are pregnant you need to take a test ASAP and find out, they can do an ultrasound to see where your IUD is at.

Have you checked for your strings lately? Sometimes they can slip out too, unnoticed! I have a friend who just had a baby because her para guard came out at some point and it's so small she didn't notice.

Not to be Peggi Panic, but absolutely take a test and get to a doctor - I have a metal one and the doctor always tells me to be mindful of my cycle for Ectopic pregnancy

Didn't you learn in health class that the only 100% effective method is abstinence?

It kills me when women don't know these basic things about birth control. Yes you can get pregnant on ANY birth control. Even if you take it 100% correctly there is still a teeny tiny chance. You can also get pregnant if you take birth control and some antibotics. Sheesh.

I'm almost a year into my second Mirena and haven't had any issues except it got bumped once (painful!) and then got really paranoid I could have gotten pregnant so I went to my Dr. I got a pregnancy test done and she checked it and it was still in place, phew! But no BC in 100% effective.

Yes its possible, even says so on the damn commercial. do you not research medication you take? or listen when its given to you?

use google for stupid questions and take a pregnancy test and call your doctor. it could be stress but it could be more. an internet forum isn't the way to stay up to date on your health.

Yes this happened to my sister. Not to freak you out, but she ended up miscarrying at around 5 months, likely due to the fact she was on BC for the first 6 weeks of her pregnancy (although that's the first I had heard of there being a connection between BC and miscarriages).

I obviously know I have to take a test (which I just did). I wasn't on here looking for health advice and yes I do read and do research on any medication I am/would be on. I wasn't using this forum as a way to stay up to date on my health either. Just wanted to see about girls who are on it and what their experiences were with Mirena. From my question, I just wanted to hear how many other girls have gotten pregnant on it.

Thanks to everyone who shared their stories and those on it!!
