Kneeling or Sitting during Catholic Ceremony

Em, on February 12, 2023 at 12:12 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 4
I am having a traditional Catholic wedding ceremony. Is it typical for the bride and groom to not sit the entire ceremony, but instead kneel when the rest of the congregation sits?

We had a Catholic ceremony and only had to kneel for the communion part. I think this may vary for each church though, so I recommend asking your parish how they conduct wedding masses. That might sound surprising but I’ve also attended various Catholic weddings as a guest as well and found that each did certain things in weddings differently.

Depends on the church. We didn't kneel at all during our ceremony but my SIL/BIL kneeled for a LONG time at theirs. Both catholic masses. If you don't want to, i'd just ask the church coordinator or priest what other options you have.

I'd ask your officiant or church coordinator what they typically do and whether you'd be able to arrange it differently if you wanted to.

We had a full Catholic mass, and we stood for the opening, were seated for the readings, kneeled for the gospel, seated for the homily, stood for our vows, kneeled for communion, then stood through the end of the mass. I've seen it done differently depending on the parish. I've also seen some have kneelers in front of the seats on the altar vs having the kneelers at the center in front of the altar.

At our Roman Catholic church and at most Catholic Nuptial Masses I've attended - the wedding party stood, sat and knelt at the same times as the congregation during the Mass: stand at the processional, sit for the first 2 readings and the psalm, stand for the Gospel acclamation and Gospel reading, sit during the homily and the Offertory, stand for the Holy Holy Holy, kneel during the Consecration and Communion. The congregation will sit during the ceremony and vows while the wedding party stands. The congregation stands during the final blessing and the recessional.
