Kilts, and matching them into the wedding party

Mika, on June 21, 2012 at 6:41 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

OK, so FH is completely convinced that he wants him and his groomsmen to wear kilts, to celebrate his Scottish heritage. His clan's tartan would match everything PERFECTLY, but isn't available as a rental and costs 298 dollars a yard plus labor to have it made (ouch) so I had looked at the next best option of the Scottish national tartan which is available pretty much everywhere. Only FH and his grooms men will be in kilts, the fathers will still be in tuxes (my dad abs REFUSES to wear a kilt) Now I have the issue that my bridesmaids look lovely in our wedding colors and the groomsmen look like they belong somewhere completely other. It's pretty much the only thing that FH has asked for, so I'm sure there's a way to make it work, but for those of you who did kilts, how did you get the look of your men to tie together with the rest of the bridal party? I'm thinking maybe accessories in our color, is that ok with kilts? (bowties, can kilt jackets do pocket squares?)

    Remember Charlotte's first wedding from SATC? Probably a lame example to quote a fake TV show wedding but I'm thinking of the little tartan sashes that the girls wore around their waists. Kind of tied the look together. You could do little hair fascinators or bouquet wraps with tartan fabric too.

    I don't see why you couldn't have a tartan pocket square for any guys who don't want to wear kilts, unless it's disrespectful to the meaning of the plaid or something. (I don't know anything about Scottish culture/heritage, sorry.)

    The sash is a great way to tie it all in, actually. A tartan pocket square could look awesome with the tuxs. We are also doing kilts for our wedding party, and my dad just bought his. What is your FH's tartan? I've got a ton of kilt resources both from the wedding and from working for a Scottish ren faire. I may be able to help.

    I was in a wedding where the guys wore kilts. They didn't do anything to "tie it in" with us girls or any other part of the wedding, but it looked totally awesome! They had their red plaid and us girls were wearing plum colored dresses. Somehow it just worked.

    Aiden, He's a Hutton (http://www.scotclans.com/scottish_clans/clan_hutton/tartan.html) and that's his tartan. Our colors are Malibu and white, so that would have been soooo perfect!! Any kilt resources you have, I'd LOVE to see, I've been having a very hard time with this kilt business.

    May I ask what your total budget for his kilt is?

    Haha, right now, about 150, which was going to cover a rental. We could probably fudge the numbers a little, but not more than 300, and I don't think that's enough to buy a properly made one... and certainly not for the grooms men... I suppose we could probably buy kilts and rent the rest (maybe?) but we want to keep the cost low for our groomsmen too, if possible

    I have to say, I am getting extremely mixed results when I look for a tartan under that name. If you read what it says under the picture of the tartan on that link, it is actually the Strathclyde District tartan, as there is no tartan registered under that name. From what I know, district tartans can be much more difficult to find. Perhaps trace his Scottish ancestry and see if there is another one that he could use (other than the Scottish National).

    The only reason we were looking at the scottish national is that it's one of the few that I could find avail to rent. Strathclyde district does have ties to his family. Of the places that we've found to rent, all of them have scottish national, several have black watch, and several have a couple of other clans. We just thought that the scottish national was the best choice of those because it's still part of his heritage and is the least clash-y with the wedding colors.

    Wow! Those are some really decent prices. Have you ordered from them before, do you think they're any good?

    They come highly recomended by several of our friends at faire that have ordered from them. Another one to look at is GotKilt.com. They're vendors at our faire, and my dad just bought his Black Watch kilt from them.

    Aidan, you and I need to talk! I'm running into the same issue with FH's family tartan. It's a rare one, so really expensive!! Could you PM me the companies you know of? Women's garb is so much easier!

    So nice to see another rennie getting married on the forum Smiley smile

    Womens garb is WAAAAAY easier Smiley smile We even thought about a renfest wedding, but decided that a more traditional wedding might be the way to go.

    @Serenity

    Always nice to find another rennie here! What tartan are you looking for? I'm counting my blessings that I work for a Scottish faire (14th century Scotland, King Robert The Bruce) right now, because I have a good number of kilt connections.

    @Mika

    We're doing a mix between traditional and ren faire. The faire is our venue (ceremony in the faerie forest, reception in the town hall), we're being married by the king (a good friend), the men are in kilts, my girls (and man of honor) are in garb with wings, and one bridesmaid is actually my faerie cast director, in her full fae regalia. My dress isn't really ren, but will have angel sleeves added. Lots of celtic music from our quartet, our faires own Drunk and Sailor performing, and guests encouraged to dress up. It should be a lot of fun!

    Smiley smile That sounds like a lot of fun. We'd like to have some Celtic music as well. We want a winter wedding, and the faire near us isn't available in winter, so it's a no-go as far as a venue (although it would be beautiful in spring!) , plus it's probably too far for my dad to travel. FH is Irish and Scottish, so we'll have a sprig of shamrock in each bouquet and on boutineirs (which will from here-on-out be known as manflowers, because I can't even spell it close enough for spell check to know what I mean). We're doing everything on a tight budget, partly because we want to save money for a home and partly because when we first started dating we were so broke we didn't know where our next meals were coming from, and we really learned how to make a good life with little money, and we want to keep true to that. There's a possibility that FH might get a promotion that would land us in the same town where we met and went to college, so if that happens, I think we might use the campus chapel

    Thanks! And the chapel at the college where you met, that would be so cute! There is a lot of really awesome Celtic instrumental out there, and a lot of great songs with lyrics, so there's a lot to choose from. Both FH and I have Scottish/Irish heritage, so we're kind of going all out with incorporating that. Luckily our venue doesn't need much in the way of decor, so we've got more money free for other things.

    Decor isn't going to be a huge part of out budget either, because I like to think that the people add to the atmosphere more than the decorations on the place. I'm think celtic instrumental for the ceremony, and pop for the reception, but I still have to find a way to work "our song" into the reception... Our first dance is going to be "We've only just begun" by the carpenters, which I've literally had picked out since I realized that boys don't have cooties. Our song is "Friends in Low Places," so doesn't really work for a slow dance, but definitely needs to come up a couple of times during the night, and to have a special place in the reception. I'm still not sure how I want to work that one in...

    If you want some good upbeat stuff for the reception that has a Celtic flair, check out Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murpheys and our personal fave, Great Big Sea. We're using some of their stuff in our ceremony, actually. For your dance, maybe do an extended one and have it go from the slow song in to your song.

    I agree that the people add more to the atmosphere than anything else ever could. We're hanging small crystals from the trees where the ceremony is and using candles and naturals for the reception, along with banners with our family crests.

    North Sea Gas is another amazing group from Scotland. Might want to check them out.

    Aidan - our faire is Henry VIII, so we only have 1 kilt shop Smiley sad Waiting to hear back from FMIL as to which tartan it is. I'll let you know when I find out. I'm Italian so I don't have to worry about clans and whatnot LOL.

    Mika - that would be so cute to use the chapel at the college where you guys met! I hope you get to do that.

    We are doing a straight faire wedding, practically no "traditional" stuff since we both had the huge blow-out traditional weddings the first time. We are also not allowed to decorate, so that is a money saver right there!
