Kids......what do they count as?

Tommy, on May 25, 2010 at 10:18 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

So we have quite a few children in the family... all under the age of 10... I'd say about 16 or so... My FH's is the baby of the family, last to get married...and his sisters and cuz's all have kids... of course they have thier own little kid section at the wedding...but how do we count them as far as catering goes?

I would probably count them as half a person. I've never known many kids to truly enjoy wedding food. LOL.

For your own count you may want to note them different. My venue serves a kid menu so you may want to check with them.

I'm doing what jennhutch said: half a person each b/c most are under 8 years old and won't eat as much as an adult might... especially since our food is sort of buffet style.

If you're doing a buffet, count each kid as half a person. If you're doing seated, you really have to talk to your caterer. Prices I've seen are usually about 2/3 the cost for a kid. Like, $30 for an adult, $20 for a kid. We're going to do a buffet and I plan on counting kids 10 and older as adults and the younger ones will be 2-to-1. Right now, we're planning to have roughly 65 guests, 20 being kids and we're ordering about 50 servings of most things, 60 of others, it just depends. I doubt everyone will take a full serving of everything anyways, but I do want to have extra of the more popular things just in case, and especially the things kids will gravitate towards, like mac & cheese.

When I checked into this with my venue I learned that 12 and under are 50% off per plate, and under the age of 5 are free! I saved about $400 and was super happy. It's worth it to ask them!

I actually just got back from my appointment with all of catering stuff... We counted them as kids, which they had kid menus (chicken nuggets, hot dogs, hamburgers, grilled cheese & fries) . Also we had called families and doubled checked to see if the kids would want the kids menu or more the adult menu. We did save 50% off per the kids plates. Talk to your venue... Wouldnt hurt to ask.

Depends on the venue/catering. each place has their own rule about that.

Check with the venue. At mine, kids under 12 get $10 chicken fingers, and anyone between 12 and 21 is 1/2 price since they don't get booze. We actually keep joking that we should tell all of our friends to order the chicken fingers to save us lots of money!!
