Kids not invited, cousin supposedly can't find a babysitter.

Fran, on October 1, 2016 at 5:54 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 26

The only children invited to the wedding are my nieces and nephews and two (under 2) coming from Australia with their parents. My cousin claims she can't find a sitter because all her sitters will be at the wedding and she doesn't trust anyone else. I feel as if she should just figure it out and make it happen. My final count is due in 7 days and I'm waiting on her response. I feel as if she waiting for me to cave. What do you all think about this? It's causing me major stress!

She should decline and stay home.

If it's one child, I would just let her bring the child. He or she can play with the little kids from Australia.

If she can't find a babysitter then she should decline the invitation.

Don't cave. If she can't find a sitter, sorry for her but she should decline.

I say, if you said on the invite no kids..then she should have respected that. My cousin is having her wedding this month and said no kids on the invite, and my other cousin said they didnt see that but already booked a hotel with the 3 kids under 6,including a newborn. The bride said sorry, and my cousin isnt coming. Its your day! Either they will make adjustments or they wont, you shoudnt have to.

I think it depends on how much you want your cousin there.

She does kinda have a point, but at the same time, you were clear about no kids.

If there is no kids then they need to bring a sitter with them our sadly not come. We are doing the same for Our wedding. One of my cousins is going to have all the kids at her house. I'm getting then food and games for all the kids.

She has no obligation to "make it happen". All you have to do is say "ok, we'll miss you!" and then let it go.

Just keep in mind that if you allow her to bring her kids and there are other people there that had to find sitters for theirs, this could cause some upset.

I'm no where near close to my wedding but the only people under the age of 18 that will be at my wedding will be FSIL and my niece and nephew. I have an aunt and uncle who will likely try and make it down from West Virginia with their grandkids that are 12 and 15. Aunt and Uncle is invited but the two kids aren't. Though, I have a weird feeling they're gonna end up showing up anyways because my aunt is one of those, 'does as she pleases,' individuals.

You made it clear that there are no children other than the ones specified. If your cousin can't get a babysitter then she doesn't get to attend.

Mrs. Sitzman, there will already be small children there. OP made an exception for someone else.

I'd say allowing people coming from Australia with children is a little different though A.L.C.

Hello date twin Smiley smile . Well I have the same situation. The only kids invited are our 3 kids and my 7 year old cousin, and he is only coming because my aunt is traveling 8 hours to get to our wedding with her husband. I have a few friends that told me they can't make it because their kids can't come. That they have never been to a wedding where kids weren't allowed. Hahaha I just laughed it off and said no worries.

It just depends on which is more important to you, having her there or not having more children there. If it's not that important to you for her to be there, then stand firm about her kids not coming, and graciously accept her decline. It's not necessarily a "make it happen" situation.

Oh, and when you get a chance, please change your avatar (profile picture). Right now we're just seeing the default double rings picture, and that makes it hard for us to tell you apart from everyone else and start getting to know you. You can choose a picture of yourself or just about anything that you like...it's up to you! I'm posting instructions below, but if you have any trouble, just email a picture to community@weddingwire.com, and we'll be happy to update it for you!

She will probably decline then. Only CLOSE family watches my kids. If you really want her to come, then allow her to bring her child.

It sounds like the kids you made an exception for already (your niece and nephew) was a fair line to draw. All the other children of the people invited are not as closely related to you, correct? I actually think you would have a bigger problem having to explain to other relatives why their children could not attend if you made an exception further than your niece and nephew because the line would be less clear. Stand your ground. If anything, give her the numbers for reliable baby sitters your other family members use that won't be at the wedding.

I am in a similar situation, although my wedding isn't for another year! We are having a strict, adult-only event. We have an exception as well, and that is for my family who is traveling a thousand miles!

I agree with many of the other ladies - don't cave. It could cause unnecessary upset. A lot of weddings are child-free, and if that's what you want, then that's what you should get! Smiley smile

This has been a major cause of my stress lately. I've had to call four of my cousins to kindly remind them that their children are not invited.

Fran, assume she is not coming and move on. It is not as easy as you might think to find babysitters, so you may not want to toss 'should' around quite so much. She could just as easily say you 'should' invite children, or at least allow hers. I use my mom and sister primarily when I need babysitting. If we're all going to the same event, it can be really hard to find anyone to watch my kids (and I'm not that picky) as, at least in my neighborhood, it's not something all the kids do like when I was growing up.
