Kid's meals

MrsF2B, on March 9, 2016 at 9:52 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

We're expecting maybe a dozen kids to be at the wedding, with a wide variety in ages. We have an option of ordering a kid's meal for them or letting them eat at the buffet with the adults, but the venue needs to know which we're doing in advance. We thought we would just leave it up to the individual parents to decide which is best for their kids. Is that ok, or will the kids whose parents choose one thing be upset when they see other kids eating something else?

Also, for the kid's meals, is cheese pizza, hot dogs or chicken fingers a better choice? They all come with fries, except the pizza.

Leave it up to the parents, especially since you have a wide variety in ages. some kids will really like what you have to offer for a kid's meal but some parents might not be too impressed with the nutritional quality. I know people who feed their kids that stuff, and I know a surprising amount of people who don't!

We're going to put a section on the RSVP along with our vegetarian option to let parent's decide!

@Jeleebeenz - to be honest, I was bit surprised at the kid's menu myself! But it's all that's on offer, and I guess it's like going to Chuck E Cheese when I was a kid - a special treat that you shouldn't eat every day. Luckily, the buffet has lots of healthy options if parents aren't impressed.

Whats in your buffet? I have to make the same decision today. But I can't decide which buffet to choose.

We have salmon, brisket, salad, grilled veggies and potato. I added two kids choices chicken fingers and homemade mac and cheese. We are having mixed fruit and veggie tables for cocktail hour. I figure there will be plenty of food for kids to eat along with the two choices on the buffet.

Let each family decide for themselves. As for the meal, I would go with chicken fingers and fries.

We are doing a buffett bbq, but our caterer will be bringing kid favorites too. We will have waffle fries, chicken nuggets, and corndogs for them. I didn't include any of that in the menu selections because I trust parents will pick what's best for their child. As long as you have options in your buffett that appeal to kids, you're fine. You won't need specific meals for them.

Thanks for the feedback ladies. Our buffet is roast chicken, fettuccine alfredo, meatballs in marinara, roasted veggies with balsamic, garden salad, tuscan bean salad, breads and cheeses. We also have a soup that will be served before the meal. Is that kid friendly enough to just avoid kid's meals? Little me would have gone to town on that, but I've never been a picky eater.

I'm worried about the chicken, because it has a wine glaze.

The kids we have are all under 6, so we opted for the kids meal. If they REALLY want something from the buffet, im sure we will have enough for mom or dad to give them some off their plate or grab a little extra while in line - they're little enough that they wont eat much, so it seems silly to allot and pay for an adult portion for them. Love all the kiddos at my wedding, but $10/plate vs $43/plate was an easy decision when it comes to feeding preschoolers.

If you're venturing into the 9-12 age group, i'd let the parents decide since they know their kid's tastes and appetites best, and whether or not they'll have any interest in the adult meal. You really can't go wrong with any of the kids meal options with most kids. We're doing chicken tenders or hot dogs with fries.

I feel like most kids would eat either the meatballs or the fettuccine Alfredo, but it depends on their ages. I would probably just ask the parents what they prefer to do.

One thing to keep in mind is that you may have vegan/vegetarian children. So if you force the kids to have the kids meal you have problems in that there's only one vegetarian meal and no vegan choice. Really at that point I think you'd need to go with the pizza since it at least covers vegetarians.

The few kids who will be at ours are such great eaters that I don't have to worry about this, but I would say put it on the invite/ask the parents.

We are going chicken fingers for the kids option. Above 150 (total - not just kids!) the rate for us is half (same as vendor Rate).

We're doing a kids menu. Most of the kids we know don't sit down to eat a full meal.. They will take 1 bite and say they're full and ready for dessert. The price difference between the two is pretty significant.

We are asking parents what they would like to do. Our venue gives the option of a typical kids meal for $5.99 or kids can do the buffet for $12.99. Way better than the $38 for adults.
