How would you handle this? My cousin and her husband have two children. The baby will be 10 months old at the time of the wedding. How would you handle this? My cousin and her husband have two children. The baby will be 10 months old at the time of the wedding. She asked what the kids meal would be, I explained it is chicken tenders and fries. She rsvp'd for two kids meals. Um...10 month olds shouldn't have french fries and deep fried chicken. My cousin and her husband are morbidly obese. My mother thinks they're ordering two kids meals so they have additional food, not actually for their children. Kids meals are EXPENSIVE. I don't feel comfortable paying for an extra children's meal that I KNOW a baby couldnt even eat. So, what do I do? I have no problem with getting a kid's meal for the 2 year old, as I do believe in properly hosting guests... but a baby. Yesh. I dunno.

I just didn't see the food so much as a problem in itself though from the sounds of it, he or she may be eating worse already

My kid ate chicken at 10 months old and chunks of potatoes (we don't make fried food). However, we would probably pack food for him to eat at an event or give him something from my plate. Assume this is what the parents will do.

My daughter was totally eating that at 10 months old. Like someone else mentioned "baby led weaning". My daughter right now is 18 months old and she can devour food like the rest of us. Honestly don't try to dictate what the child should and shouldn't eat, it's not your kid. If the parents say their child can eat that then you need to believe them that they can handle it.

10 month old should not be eating like that. Im sure they will be bringing formula and baby food.

My daughter was totally off of formula at 10 months. I always read at 1 year you can switch. I was at a doctors appointment at 8 months and FH asked. I laughed and was like babe 1 year I've told you this. Our Doctor actually said with how well she is doing with food that we could start to move her to milk see how she takes it and in a few weeks come back and we'd go over it. She took to milk so well that our Doctor told us at 9 months we could get her off of it completely. I really don't think you should assume anything. If they want 2 meals then you should give it to them. If that's what their kid is capable of eating you shouldn't get to dictate that. I mean honestly how much is a kids meal. Is 1 more for their child really going to break the bank?

I agree you don't need to provide a meal for a 10 month old. But you think because they are overweight they are using their baby to con you out of extra food? Judgmental much.

I second spazzy! Hugeeee difference between a not even 1 year old and almost 2 year old. Lol

I think you need to have a conversation with your cousin that the caterer won't even provide food for her 10 month old. And lose the attitude on overweight people.

Both my kids ate "people" food by 10 months. They would eat off of my plate so whatever I ate, they would too.

What are the adult choices (as in are they heavily spiced/flavoured) that may too much for the baby to handle versus chicken and fries

That's crazy, just let them know you don't feel comfortable paying it

^^NO. Do not say anything about not being comfortable paying. If anything say "That's a lot of food for a 10 month old! Are you sure he/she needs that much?"

No, do not pay for the 10 month old. They should be eating from their parents, ideally baby food. You won't be helping the obesity problem with catering (no pun intended) to these requests. Even if your caterer doesn't have a kid age minimum like 2 years old and over, I would tell the parents that. It's a white lie for the better of the kid. Even if they're practicing BLW the kid should not be eating those dishes.

I would think that all that grease and salt would mess with the baby's stomach. I believe my sister was practicing BLW with my niece when she was around that age but like Spazzy said, it was soft solids like rice mixed in with puréed veggies and then it graduated to Cheerios and solid green beans. But she cooked everything at home so she could control the salt/seasoning (non existent). I feel like that baby would be miserable with that kind of food.

Our caterer provides food for ages 3 and up. Any child below 3, is expected to eat off their parents plate, or have their own food brought in.

I didn't bother with a kids meal, since it was the same price as the meal we are serving.

    For reference:

    Ages 0-2: no meal.

    Ages 3-6: free

Ages 7-10: 1/2 price of regular meal, or kids meal at same cost.

    @Amberrose - you obviously don't have children.

Most children by 10 months eat non-pureed foods even if they aren't doing Baby-Led-Weaning. My kid was eating curries and anything with spice at 6 months and up. We just fed him whatever we ate, just in smaller portions and cooked for a bit longer. He is 3 now and the furthest from a picky eater.

I get the feeling that this really isn't about the cost of one child's plated meal (even if it is overpriced chicken nuggets). My mind went exactly where your mind went -- fried foods for ca baby who is at an age where solid foods are being introduced? Isn't this generally the time that parents experiment with soft, cooked pasta and veggies all mashed up (I kind of remember Cheerios and Goldfish...or maybe not the Goldfish)?

Sorry, but I wouldn't be complicit in this either. Maybe the parents do want more food for themselves. If that's the case, they can stop at McDonalds and pick up the same meal before or after the wedding.

Just tell them what others have suggested, that the venue will not serve a child's meal to a baby. All you have to do is drop them an email and say, "We just received your RSVP and we're thrilled that you and the kids will be able to make it to the wedding. There is one issue I wanted to clear up -- and I'm sorry if I was the cause of any confusion. As it turns out, the venue will not serve babies a child's plate. I know you checked off two child meals on the RSVP, but the venue suggests that the guests bringing babies also bring a pre-made meal or a jar of baby food. Again, sorry for the mix-up. Looking forward to seeing you in August!"

That makes me feel gross. Almost as bad as the 10 month old I saw drinking soda at the zoo. You cant tell people how to raise there kids but man that is pretty bad. Yes you can technically feed your 10 month such food but its really not in the best interest, breast milk has all the nutrion a child needs up to 2 years (not saying that every mother should breast feed that long, its a fact not an opinion.) And if they are filling up on chicken nugget and french fries they are not getting a balance diet.

I think they can share one plate. They should hopefully bring other food for the 10 month old.

Phew lots of mommy judgement on this thread.

I would follow up for clarification - maybe she thought since she was bringing the baby you needed him for the meal/seat count. A little harsh to jump to the conclusion that she wanted extra food for herself.
