Keep the top tier for 1st anniversary?

Do people still keep the top tier to eat on 1st anniversary? I know this used to be the thing to do but thinking it may not be anymore. What are your thoughts?

I think people still do it but I would never keep a cake that long. We are doing Nothing Bundt Cakes for our wedding cake so on our first anniversary we will get a bundtlet of the same flavor we will have! Then it'll be fresh and actually taste good haha...plus we won't actually have a traditional top tier.

I've seen people on the day of the wedding write letters for each other for their first anniversary instead of the old cake tradition. I'm not sure what we will be doing, we'll probably do tradition but I'm not sure.

I Know A Lot Of People Who Have Done it. If You Store It Correctly, The Cake Will Be Fine.

O yes do it!! Honestly it's just a bite usually. Don't expect too notch. Even after having it wrapped professionally , it was was dry, but expected. We did toss the rest out. Fun to look forward to!!

Honestly I really think it depends on the quality of food from your vendor.

Typically I wouldn't eat year old cake either, but the venue owner where I got married was a dope chef and I trusted him to know what he was doing. He wrapped our cake up for us airtight and a year later, it honestly tasted the exact same and was DELICIOUS. The next day it was definitely starting to get that freezer taste other people are referencing, but I think if you trust the person making it, you should save it to have for at least the night of the anniversary!

We're not keeping it, I would rather pay the bakery to recreate it than eat old cake. Smiley smile

My sister kept hers for their first anniversary and we're planning to keep ours. She looked up the best way to store a cake in the freezer and Martha Stewart has a great guide. She said it tasted exactly like it did at their wedding

We’re not having a traditional cake, we’re having a crepe cake since it’s a breakfast reception, but I have frozen cake in the past and it was fine. I stored it in an air-tight container and it did not get freezer burned, pick up tastes or smells from other food, or anything. It tasted pretty much the same as when I’d baked it, though it was a bit drier. The only reason we froze it is because we had so much leftover cake, otherwise fresh cake is always going to be better. If it’s a tradition you like, go for it just make sure you store it right, if not leave it.

It also stems from the custom brought over from Europe that wedding cakes were fruitcakes that last forever (like you get at Christmas) instead of the sponge cakes we have now.

Check with your baker! Our baker will do a fresh anniversary cake, if we send in a professional picture of the cake the day of. My MIL took everything after the wedding when we left for our honeymoon and she never put it in the freezer. So ate wedding cake for a few days lol.

I have been debating on it. I have not heard anyone say if they were doing this or not. So wasnt sure if people still did or if the tradition died out so to speak.

I have heard that more and more people are not doing it but I have not witnessed that first hand. So I think it's going to be a if you want to or not kind of thing.

I think the idea is super cute, but I would not. I've heard many people say it's gross after a year, and it just doesn't sound appetizing to me. lol

Ew. Ew. Ew. I can't. We did not save any of our cake from our first wedding. And we aren't saving cake from our next wedding. I'll buy a cookie cake or something next year.

I need to know the answer to this too. I’m here for advice lol. Hello Christy!

I think we will be having a separate topping to keep. So we can just cut the cake.
