July 5th or July 18th?

Kristen, on August 5, 2013 at 8:10 AM Posted in Planning 0 20

My fiancée and I finally found the perfect venue for our reception. We have two dates to choose from. July 5th which is the Saturday after fourth of July, obviously or July 18th which is a Friday night.

Which would you choose? (both dates are the same price)

It depends on your guests. Will they take advantage of a 3-day holiday weekend to attend your wedding or will they already have 4th of July plans?

That may limit your guest the day after a Holiday or it may allow everone to be apart of it being that it is a long weekend. My sis got married a few yrs ago the sat after Thanksgiving and she had a great turn out. but some guest were out of town due to the Holiday. But the July 5 is considered a holiday weekend so be aware of cost and room rates my increase. good luck.

I prefer holiday weekend weddings so I would go for the 5th. But like the other ladies have said - not all guests feel this way.

Confession - I intentionally suggested a holiday weekend to FH knowing that not everyone will be able to attend. He wanted a big wedding, I wanted a small wedding - he "won" so this was my attempt to control the numbers.

it works for a whole lot of other reasons as well, but primarily because I know people may have annual plans/traditions for that weekend.

18th. I'm not a fan of holiday weekend weddings. We had a Friday wedding and after the initial bitching, people were happy that the day after the wedding they still had a whole weekend ahead of them and didn't have to get back to work.

July 5 might be expensive to fly if you have any out of town guests. But I'm not sure. I think id do July 5 lol

18th. No one complained about our Friday date at all. We've actually heard several people say they appreciated the extra day to recover. The vast majority of our guests are local to our venue, though.

Personally, I would steer away from July 5th because I would be afraid my friends and family would all be hungover from the holiday. That just depends on your guests though...

July 18 would be financially better for OOT guest. Holiday means increase charges for flights.

I do at least four weddings surrounding every holiday weekend. I think I'd take an unofficial poll with the guests you REALLY hope to have and see what they think.

I'm in FL, so both of those would be terribly hot!! But it wouldn't make too much of a difference for me, as long as it was in town. I definitely suggest talking to your VIPs (family and closest bestest friends) to make sure THEY can attend those dates. If they can, then either one could work. I would keep in mind air travel at holiday times, though, it could be more expensive or it could be about the same depending on when you book.

Welcome to WW, Kristen!! I hope you'll stick around and update that avatar (the rings) to ANY unique picture we can remember you by. This post tells you how: https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/welcome-to-the-weddingwire-forums-please-read-if-you-are-new/b433c40c1a62b96a.html

Definitely the 18th! Friday weddings for the win!

Paris - you may get stoned with that date around here. I know what I'm doing two days after Thanksgiving for the rest of my life. (Watching the Clemson-Carolina game either in person or on TV - way more important in SC than the Super Bowl). Haha! But I like the way you manipulated it!

Thank you all so much for your insight. We decided to have it on the 5th of July and we are going to send out "save the date" magnets early. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. 11 months from today!!!

I am not opposed to a holiday weekend (we are getting married the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend) but I agree that you should ask your families and most important guests what would work best. We are having a destination wedding so it made sense to have it on a long weekend, to gove people extra time for traveling.

Hmmm...that's a tough one. I think you have to ask yourself if your guests will attend the Saturday after a holiday, or will they have plans, and a Friday...will everyone be able to attend (it's a weekday). You know your guests best. If it were me, knowing our guests, I'd choose the Saturday.

We did July 5 this year, and it was perfect!

Everyone took off Friday and had a 4 day weekend (the 4th was on a Thursday)...with the Friday as a holiday, it would be awesome.

And yes, we had fewer people, but that was a BONUS for me. 300 invited...175 attended. The ballroom was at it's comfortable capacity and I wouldn't have wanted more people. 175 was almost too much as it was!

I say July 5th. I honestly prefer a Saturday wedding over a Friday. I would send out Save the Dates for sure so that people will know in advance. If you decide on July 5th, just start to get the word out right away.
