Jewish posters: help me come up with music for circling?

they/them pigeon, on December 3, 2015 at 2:26 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

I was browsing Offbeat Bride's "Jewish" tag and noticed a couple weddings where they had music for circling, and now that I think about it, that does seem like a good idea since otherwise everyone's just dead silent while you walk around each other. The wedding I was looking at used "Crawled Out Of The Sea" by Laura Marling and Joan Baez's cover of "I Never Will Marry", which are just a hair too hipster-ful for us, I think. Traditional Jewish music -- maybe Vanessa Paloma? -- and Ella Fitzgerald are the only ideas I have so far... suggestions, anyone?

In case non-Jewish posters might have suggestions -- Jewish ceremonies traditionally start with the bride walking seven circles around the groom. The egalitarian version is, partner A walks 3 circles around partner B, partner B walks 3 circles around partner A, and they walk the last circle together, which is what we're doing. (cont)

Stories about its significance vary, but our favorites are that it echoes the seven ages of creation, and that by circling one another the couple create walls of privacy around their relationship, like the walls of the home.

I am Jewish but I have never heard of or seen this ritual. Now I'm very curious to learn more! If you're looking for some traditional Jewish music, how about some Neil Diamond? Smiley winking But seriously, I think you should just pick a song that is meaningful to you both, and go for it. Or maybe something instrumental would be nice.

I've never seen this done to music, but it's also been years since I've been to a Jewish wedding. I think adding music is a cool idea. Maybe your rabbi has a suggestion? FH and I are skipping the circling since it's an interfaith wedding. I tried researching for you but couldn't find any good suggestion.
