Hi All,

This is a difficult post to write, because I simultaneously understand that finding the right officiant is important, and appreciate that religious officiants typically have multiple meetings with their couples prior to the actual wedding date in an attempt to "prepare the couple for marriage"- not just the ceremony... but with that said, this is ultimately another vendor hire for the wedding, and pricing does need to be taken into account. I'm not trying to pinch pennies when it comes to a religious thing, but I do have to be realistic about a budget.

I had a possible Rabbi quote me at $1800, which does include multiple meetings prior to the ceremony... but is just not in our budget. I also know that NYC is particularly expensive in general- so my question is- is that a typical price for a religious officiant in this area? I feel like I can stand up to vendors in every other area of my wedding, but I'm afraid to tell a Rabbi "No".

No offence intended!

Help!

Not in the NYC area, but for our Rabbi, we don't actually have a set cost. Since we are members of our synagogue, the Rabbi said the only cost for her would be a suggested donation to her discretionary fund or one of the other Temple funds. She said that typically, it is approximately a $100 donation.

$750. - $2,000. is what Rabbi's get in NYC. Some are better than others and the dollar amount isn't always hand in hand with the quality or value. I am glad that you found someone you are happy with.

Did you end up finding an affordable rabbi? I'm looking for one in NYC and having trouble myself!

Hello Julie - we were officiated by Rabbi Andy Dubin - https://www.weddingwire.com/biz/rabbi-dr-andy-dubin-wedding-officiant-for-all-traditions-new-york/c33b75651c2c37db.html

He was wonderful. We met with him a few times before, and he made us feel so comfortable. He asked us tough questions which helped us think through a lot before the big day, it was great to have those talks. He quoted us a bit higher than our budget, and we let him know what our budget was, and he was respectful of it, and it was greatly appreciated. More than the budget though, while he was a "vendor", by the day of the wedding, it felt like we were being married by someone we knew, which was wonderful. I'd recommend him any day.

This is an old topic but still helpful! We are looking into having our wedding back in NYC (we are in California now). It's also expensive in CA for wedding rabbis, but not nearly as much as in NYC. The most affordable one that I found in CA was $800 for 1 meeting, up to 10 emails/phone calls (yeah she keeps track lmao). she does include a chuppah though to decorate which made her somewhat reasonable since chuppah rentals here usually start at $200 (doesnt include drapes or anything...just the frame but we will probably just make one with PVC pipes lol).
