Jared Rant ***Update in comments***

MrsM., on January 9, 2015 at 10:22 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

Has anyone else had issues with Jared? We got my engagement ring from them, and was generally happy with them until last night...

We can't find a band to match the engagement ring, so we are having a custom band made. We went in November to get a quote on how much it would be. They came back with $1100, which we thought was fine, but we said we wanted to wait til after the holidays so I would have my engagement ring. A manager sat down with us and tried to talk us into making the purchase that day, so clearly he saw the amount as well. Continued in comments

Last week we went in to get the custom ring made, again they gave us the price of $1100, which we paid on for that day. Last night we get a call telling us that the sales person had entered the information wrong, and had put 0 for the diamond weight, and that the ring would actually cost us an additional $1100! I'm sorry but after TWO visits they should have caught this ahead of time, not a week after we make the purchase. So now we are having to go in to fight over this price increase.

I think this is their error that they should have caught, prior to the purchase, and it's on them to eat it. If this had been any other piece of jewelry that we had left with that day, they would not be calling us to say oops we sold it to you at the wrong price, come back and give us more money. UGH.

That sucks. Smiley sad But in this case, what the likely result will be is that they will refund you the money and say "sorry". I doubt they'll eat $1100 worth of diamond cost.

    Oh no !! Smiley sad

More than likely they will give you a refund for your money though. Or maybe lower the extra cost a little. I don't think they would pay for half of your ring because of the mistake unfortunately..

Seriously though, there is no way that the diamonds are $1100. It's a 1/3 ct of accent diamonds. We could purchase the ring from them for $900 for 1/2 ct. The custom charge is $600 for the labor, so no way is the ring $2200. After TWO visits, and a manager seeing this, the error should have been caught.

If the ring is custom, what does your contract/proposal/bill say?

Does it say X design with X weight diamond? You must have some sort of paperwork showing what you were getting. If it shows the diamond included, then you have something to go in with.

Our paper work says practically nothing. Just marked custom. All the paper work with any information is on their copy.

I highly highly doubt you're going to get the diamonds without additional cost. But I do think you can get your money back and go elsewhere.

If they don't honor this, we are definitely going somewhere else.

Is it typical for big companies not to have any description on your copy? I have only worked with small jewelers. They write everything down and we both get the same information. That's how they prevent mistakes. If it is custom, did you choose the stone(s)?

No, it is marked on their paper work as a Shadow band. Basically to match my engagement ring. My engagement ring is a prong set diamond band with a solitaire in the center. The prongs on my engagement ring are a little wide set, so most of the pre-fab bands the diamonds are set much closer together. So that's why we went custom. it was just a wedding band with very small accent, prong set diamonds, going about half around the ring.

Wow. You could probably get a discount but don't expect the whole cost.

Oh noo!!! We have never had any problems with Jared's. Maybe it's just that store. They should give you a refund if anything else. Good luck!!! I hope for the best for you and your FH Smiley smile

I would probably just ask for the money back and go elsewhere at this point. Realistically, you don't have anything saying the diamonds were included, so it's likely that they don't have to play ball.

Seems weird to me that the system wouldn't have kicked something back as it was entered. How many bands without diamonds in them could they possibly be selling?

I plan to fight this. I really don't want to start this process over. The whole reason to have it done there was to have both my rings at the same place for the warranty so inspections and cleanings could be done at the same time. It's really dampened my spirits for this week. We only agreed to the custom ring because it was only a few hundred more than a pre-fab band.

I worked in jewelry for many years. If your paperwork says shadow bands, it was not quoted with diamonds at all. It was originally quoted to be a plain band. If you are adding prong set diamond. There is a "4 prong head" the diamonds need to be set into. Each head has a cost of about $100, and then a charge for setting them into the head.

A shadow band is just a plain band that hugs your ring. I wish you luck, but I highly doubt you are going to get your diamonds, heads, and mounting for no charge. I wish you the best!

I had some work done at Jareds after i got my e-ring, and after i dropped it off, read a ton of awful reviews. But everything went really smoothly. That being said, they're not going to give you the diamonds. Get a refund and find another place.

That stinks. We love Jared though. I got my engagement ring and wedding bands from there. My band was only about $600.

My paperwork just has custom marked off. The thing is I specifically asked about the diamond cts in our first consultation. My engagement ring band is 1/5 ct weight, so the sales person had entered the quote, and i requested the wedding band be 1/3 ct and i asked if that would change the price, the sales person said no. In the second one I said I wanted the band to be a little wider, again these specs did not effect the price. I just think that when I am asking these kinds of questions, it should have been checked. There were plenty of opportunities to correct the error, prior to us signing off on this purchase.
