Jackets for Bridesmaids

ShakespeareBride, on March 10, 2017 at 4:05 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 29

So my wedding is in the winter, in northern PA, so it will be cold. As such my girls have asked if they would be allowed to wear little shrugs or bolero jackets and I am all on board with that. There is one issue, some want to wear them during the ceremony and I am worried about them looking too casual if we are trying to find ones for warmth. I don't want the super fancy ones, they are usually lace and offer no warmth, but would prefer not sweater like ones that look like your ready to lounge by the fire. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Is your ceremony outside?

Wait, why do they want jackets? Where is the ceremony being held? You can't have it somewhere where the ambient temperature is below about 68 degrees.

No the ceremony is not outside, its more for modesty for some of them. We will be having a few pictures outside as well.

If the people in your wedding party are not comfortable wearing a certain dress without a coverup for "modesty," you need to choose a new dress (or better yet, allow them to choose their own new dresses.)

I have let them pick but the designs they like do not have sleeves. I am being 100% supportive of them and want them to be comfortable. This is why they would like jackets.

I vote fur stoles. So so so classy with formal wear (and you can obviously do faux if that's an issue).

What about a shawl the same color as the dress? I was in a wedding where we had the shawls and the we all wrapped them around our shoulders and under ours so that they were tied in the back and it kinda looked like a jacket. We were still able to take it off if we wanted to.

@Sara that may be nice let me run it past them.

I really just want them to feel good and not worry about things. I love my girls and want them to be happy.

I saw something like this at a winter wedding I went to. The bride had a white one and the BMs had black. Dresses were navy blue. I wasn't a fan of that color combo, but it was still cute. I don't think this is the "ready to lounge by the fire" vibe though. And honestly, anything with that vibe would be inappropriate for a wedding.

Also agree with @Sarah that you should pick a BM dress they are all comfortable in!

ETA: I see fur was nixed in the time I took to hunt down this image and type my comment.

Ok just to clarify I am NOT picking their dresses. I asked them to have long dresses in a certain color and they picked from there. It is the fact that most flattering dresses are sleeveless.

@Katherine is that a shawl or does it have sleeves? ETA: Yeah we are not big fur people, but that design might come in faux.

    It's from Macy's. Sounds like it's just a wrap. Here's the link.

@Katherine it is super cute. I wish it came in grey. I will show it to them and see what they think.

In case it is not liked has anyone else seen or used anything else?

What color/style are the dresses? You may have a hard time finding something to be honest. My bridesmaids wore wraps for our church ceremony. They all wore them a little differently, but this is how one of them looked

If they're concerned about their arms, there are ways to drape most shawls comfortably over arms. I recently wore a pashmina in at friend's wedding (for warmth - outdoor wedding, below 60 degrees) and it photographed well, didn't seem informal, and covered my arms. But it was also easily adjustable and pretty inexpensive.

I agree with Mrs. Fall Bride. I glanced at the boleros in DB and was like.........no. They were really unattractive to be honest.
