Hi all!
We are thinking of taking our honeymoon in Italy. Has anyone done this? Any tips, tricks, cost?

How long for, what are your interests, what time of year? We had three weeks there and did Rome, Naples/Pompeii, Florence, the Cinque Terre, Verona/Lake Garda and Venice. We had about the right length of time in each place and I wouldn’t have wanted to spend any less time anywhere - it would have felt really rushed if we had. Rome needs five full days to even scratch the surface, Florence needs three and Venice 2.5 to 3 days. The Cinque Terre is utterly gorgeous and magical in the morning and evening when the crowds have gone. We walked up one of the paths between villages and found a restaurant overlooking the village, sea and sunset - one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.

I've spent a collective two months (not for a honeymoon) in Italy using Orvieto as a home base, and I absolutely love it there. I think where you should depends what you're looking for. If you want the big city with the main tourist points, somewhere like Rome would be good. If you want a smaller town that still has tourist appeal, I'd highly recommend Orvieto. Personally, I've done three separate 2-3 day trips to Rome, and each time was plenty for me. The two day hop-on/hop-off bus tour was ideal for seeing all the high points even if we didn't actually go into every place. I know Rome has a lot to offer, but it felt much more like a standard big city plus old monuments and such, instead of a stereotypical Italian town, which is what I was really excited about.

If you are going to be in the Naples area, I would highly suggest taking a day trip out to the Isle of Capri. It's a little island of the coast and words can't even describe how beautiful it is. It's also super romantic. And, if you go to the top of the mountain, you can literally see for miles.

We did 12 nights in Italy...4 each in Rome, Parma and Venice. We were all about the food, so we did a food walking tour in Rome our first night, a half day food tour in Parma to see where they make cheese, ham and balsamic, and a pasta making class in Parma. It was my 3rd visit to Rome, and hubby had never been, but we still tried to take it easy and just did one thing per day...the food tour, the Vatican, and the Colosseum and Forum. There's so much more to see, but we'll just plan to go back. If we could have scheduled the tours differently in Parma, we could have done one less night there, but we got caught up with nothing much available on Sunday. All of the tours we did, we found and booked on TripAdvisor, and they were all great.

Buy this book. Rick Steves ranks the cities to see. This was my second time there and I based our trip (kind of) around his suggestions and we had an amazing time.

As PP’s mentioned, you absolutely MUST go to Cinque Terre. Stay in Manarola; I highly suggest you stay at 5 TERRE PELAGOS, an aparthotel on AirBnB. Take a boat tour! Here are some pics from our trip this past June.

Thank you for all this information, I think we would like to do 10 days or so and are looking into Rome, Venice and Florence. How are the prices there once you are in Italy?

We were there in March, so fortunately not the high season, which is mostly going to affect hotel prices...same if you’re looking at late September. Venice was the most expensive, in terms of food or even getting a coffee or gelato...it’s just so touristy, plus they have to bring everything in by boat or train, and cart it around by hand. Rome is a big city, so you’ll definitely find the whole range of prices depending on where you are in the city. I wanted our hotel to be very central and in a specific area, I think we were still under $200 a night (including breakfast) but we would look for out of the way places to eat and found lots of reasonable options, similar to home. Restaurants are more expensive the closer you are to the tourist sites, so don’t try to eat lunch across the street from the colosseum. We took the train between cities and that wasn’t expensive, we booked online before we went. Since it was our honeymoon, we were willing to splurge on some things...like the tours we did, we picked ones that were specifically small groups, so they cost more than some other options. I’m happy to send you any details of the things we did, if you’re interested.

You could fly into Milan and have three nights Lake Como then train to Rome for four nights, then Positano for two nights, and back to Rome for your trip home (or one extra night if your best flight is in the morning).

Florence is a lovely city to visit, if that could be factored in - instead of either Positano or Lake Como.

Just sent you a novel of a PM. I think 12 days was a good amount. We got to see most of the big things we wanted...and will just have to make plans to go again to see more!
