Issues with Cake Vendor

Kasyah, on September 16, 2019 at 7:29 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14
Ok, so maybe a bit of a rant but also needing help with this current situation. I reached out to a cake vendor back in January. We are doing a destination wedding and were in the area in March. We set up an appointment to do cake tasting. A week before the vendor cancels on me and says she can arrange to meet me with the cakes we chose to taste. That was fine, I get things happen and people have to reschedule. She never showed. I emailed her and asked how brides who do destination weddings usually choose cake flavors. I'm not super familiar with all the flavors and honestly I don't want to guess on something and hate the flavor. She wasn't responsive so I shrugged it off since wedding isn't until March 2020.

I reach out again trying to pick up where we left off end of June. 23 emails later over the course of two months (literally) I ask if I can call because it would seem easier. No reply to that just to my other questions. At this point I just want a quote. 12 days later and I have no reply. I'm extremely frustrated because 1-I have tried to be understanding that vendors are busy but 2- the lack of communication is driving me insane and I just want to get this over with. Should I start the process all over again or not? What would you ladies do?

I personally would try to find another cake vendor. That’s a long span of time with no correspondence, and you don’t want to be scrambling at the last minute.

Thanks, I'm thinking the same. Sad thing is her work is amazing and doesn't really compare to other cake vendors in the area. Guess I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and hope someone does just as good of a job.

A cake that doesn’t look as fancy is a lot better than no cake at all because your baker flaked out. Cut your losses while there’s still time.

I agree, another cake vendor would probably be the best idea. She seems very unreliable. Hope you find someone even better!!

Thank you! I think you ladies are right. I'll start the process again and hopefully get someone who is much more responsive.

I would definitely find another cake vendor. This one does not sound reliable at all. Good luck!

I have two potential cake vendors right now, and they’re both honestly awesome. However, one asked me about starting s basic contract before I even did my tasting and I didn’t like that. I politely declined, but asked a few questions and haven’t had a response since... I’m worried since I asked to wait that they might tell me no. I’d say find another vendor though. This one sounds worst than even mine.

That's odd. I get they want to secure your services but seeing if you're going to mesh well or they can provide what you want is a big deal, especially with the tasting. I've already contacted 2 other vendors. Hopefully we both have better luck!

Make sure to give me the same pep talk when I pick out a vendor, since we’re having a destination wedding and it’ll all be done in Puerto Rico, while I’m on the mainland lol

You’re a much nicer person than I am. I would have crossed her off the list when she didn’t show and didn’t respond. Clearly she doesn’t want your business, or care about hers enough to follow industry standards for speaking with consumers. She could be the best baker in the world, but if she can’t answer basic questions and follow through with showing up to an appointment, she may not be good with timelines and having cakes at weddings when they’re supposed to be. I would go back to the drawing board. Find someone who gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling when talking about your wedding cake.

Cut your losses. Someone who is flaky and unresponsive before the wedding is likely to be flaky and unresponsive on the wedding day. She has shown you her true colors, she is NOT a good person to give your business to.
