Is waiting 6 months before the wedding to dress shop pushing it?

Mrs. Turner2B, on February 13, 2010 at 12:32 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

I am trying to lose 10lbs before I try on dresses. I just know that I won't feel comfortable if I don't lose these 10lbs but I don't think I can do it in less than 6 weeks so I'm wondering if I start shopping for a dress 6 months before my wedding, is this sufficient time to order a dress or is it pushing it?

I think it depends on the stores.. some places will tell you OHHH NOOO has to be 7/8 months or more! others will say 5-6 months is perfect.. others will even say less is ok. My wedding is at the end of Sept and I am just going dress shopping for my formal wedding (already have ceremony dress for pre-wedding priv ceremony on 2/28) on monday.. when we called the lady said 6 months is fine, but when i spk w/Kleinfelds in the city, they said 8 months at least. I'd call around to your local shops or wherever you plan to go and ask them before you put it off for 6 weeks.. just to be sure! i think the time frame really depends on 1) how many alterations you'll need if the dress does not come in your size and 2) if you're willing to pay a rush charge.. sometimes its a lot of $ but they can get a dress in quicker that way. Good luck Smiley smile

I wouldn't push it off....remember the alterations occur once your dress comes in....alterations won't be too difficult for 10 lbs. I would shop now.

It probably depends on the store, but I totally put mine on layaway like in January & they said I was cutting it close because unless it fits you perfectly then you need time for alterations and what not.

It's pushing it. I would get the best girdle, bodyshaper and just do it, go dress shopping. Its' better to shop earlier than later. You might feel desperate for the lack of options. You would be surprised how flattering some style and material of gowns can be. I actually went shopping by myself and I found it quite nice.

Oh...also, if you do change your mind and go sooner rather than later.. just consider maybe getting a corset back, so that if you do lose the 10lbs (and i'm sure you will, no worries!) they can just tie you in tighter instead of altering the dress. When i go dress shopping Monday I plan to seek out corset backs for that very reason, i lose weight each month since having weight loss surgery, so its important that the dress fit me and i can't just ..stop losing the weight it's not really something i can control at this point. So i'll get whatever size i am now and they can suck me in later!! lol

I was going to do that too...but then i figured that i could get it in the size i'm in and they can alter later if I lose more weight.

My advice is to do the dress shopping- the alterations will be done once you've lost your 10 lbs, and should take care of tha Smiley smile

I wouldn't wait that long to start shopping. I ordered my dress 6 months before the wedding and I only got it last week (5 months after ordering it).

Why don't you start shopping now, and then when you find the dress you like, ask about waiting a couple months before you order it. They should be able to give you an idea on how long the dress you pick will take to come in. But definitely start now...it could take you a month or two of shopping to even decide on the dress!

My dress came in in 4 months. Just got a call the other day it is in (haven't gone to see it yet), and they told me to order about 7 mo in advance "to be safe." Part of that time in the 7 mo the recommended is for alterations and I think part of it is a cushion. Things can happen, and orders can get messed up. What if they would have sent the wrong gown or something was terrible wrong w/it? If I were you I'd feel better ordering it sooner rather than later. Also, it's much easier to alter a dress to be smaller than it is to be bigger. Good luck!

I was told to buy 10 to 12 months before the wedding (which ended up being bs since the dress came in 3 months. It would make me nervous to wait that long..I would at least go 7 to 8 months in advance.

Unless you plan on having major weight loss, like 50 lbs or more. I would suggest buying the dress and just having it altered. Its better to have to alter it then for the one you want not get to you by your wedding.

I am of the theory that what suits your body shape at 10 pounds heavier will suit your body at 10 pounds lighter. It is not as though we are talking a complete overhaul here- just a little toning and tightening.. right? Go shopping NOW! Don't risk not being able to get your dream dress cause you left it too late. And trust me- corset styles take 10 pounds off anyway!! Plus they can adjust it to suit whatever weight you loose....

I think you should go ahead and start shopping...10lbs isn't that much of a difference in dress sizes, and like the other posts said corset back really does do the best if you are losing weight...good luck, can't wait to see what you find!! Smiley smile

Waiting six months is cutting it close. Most places say that you need to give them six months to just order the dress. Initial fitting, alterations and finial fitting take some time as well. Good luck!

Also, find your dress and they will alter it to fit you the month or so before your wedding. The ladies at the shop will be able to tell you what your are best of doing.

I never totally have faith that things will be done in a timely manner (i.e. alterations, orders arriving, etc) so with that being said I would probably like to have a bit more than 6 months just in case. Thats just me freaking out like I normally do, realistically you can get it done in that amount of time. Good luck!

Yeah it IS pushing it. As others said alterations will take care of those 10lbs. But if you push off ordering the dress you are risking not having the choice of the gown you want i.e. the only gowns available at short notice might be only sample gowns/off the rack. 10lbs wouldn't show all that much in dress fittings. Try to accept yourself the way you are while still working towards loosing the 10 lbs
