Is this hem too short?

Hi ladies, my moh is getting married next month and she is freaking out bc she thinks they butchered her hem. It is shorter than they originally pinned it and the hem is puckered so she won’t trip? She really wanted the full gown look and she’s upset. They are fixing the pucker but its too short to let it out for more length. I think it looks really pretty still but I know she wanted floor length. Help me make her feel better!

I think it’s gorgeous, and will be perfect for flats. I agree with the PPs who said this will avoid having her lifting or tripping on it all night, and I don’t think anyone else will notice!

With that delicate hem. Ask her to think of what would happen if it is on the floor and it gets stepped on or caught in a chair? I would not make it longer cause if that end gets stuck in something it could rip.

Tell her this is perfect! I had my hem touching the floor and found that I stepped on it a lot and had to lift the whole front of my dress to walk. As long as her stride doesn’t exceed the circumference of her dress she will still have the floating ball gown vibes she wants without all the tripping.

I think they hemmed it perfectly ...... mine was a tad bit longer and honestly it drove me nuts, especially during outdoor pictures (where the ground was uneven and I was stepping on it). Even indoors I was holding it up to walk at times. I ended up wishing it had been hemmed a bit shorter.

I think she will be okay, it is right at floor length, I think she will be all set and not trip!

She looks wonderful in her dress! I wouldn't worry about the hem, when we were deciding on the length during alterations my mom was also worried that it looked too short. Our seamstress explained that it made it easier to move and dance, but that ultimately it was our decision. I kept the length like she suggested and at our final appointment we agreed it was the perfect length. I could walk in it and felt more confident (I'm clumsy so I was pretty nervous about tripping down the aisle).

I think this looks perfect! This is about the length that my dress was on me and I also wore flats. Had it been any longer I definitely would have tripped down the stairs for the ceremony lol it also would have made dancing a little tricky, so I think this is a great length! (Also, she looks so pretty in her dress, congrats to her!)

If she wears some pretty flats so it isn't any higher, I think that will make up for it. It is still very pretty!

Thank you for this info! I'm about to go to my first dress fitting and this is good to know.

It also made me google and look at other photos, yep, floor length isn't on the floor for traditional gowns like the royals have had recently:

I think the hem looks great! Like pp said it's a huge tripping hazard if it's actually touching the ground.

She's also standing on rug in her original pin photo vs on a hard flat surface in her final hem photo. If she's on any uneven surface at all (carpet, grass, anything but hard flat floor) the dress will appear longer.

I have a pre-owned dress and have been trying to find the right height shoes to go with it. I do like the look of a dress just grazing the floor (like the pin photo) but it's much easier to walk in with a slight gap like shown in the final hem photo. I sent videos of me wearing my dress with different height heels to my MOH who works in fashion retail and she said the video I sent her of me in a hem length similar to your MOH's final hem photo looks right to her. I've heard anything from 1" to a thumbs width to enough to pass your hand under the dress as being the "right" hem length for a standard floor length dress.

To make myself feel better I went to ASOS's website because they have videos of all of their current dresses, so I looked at a few different floor length styles and clicked the videos to watch at what height they were hemmed and how they moved hemmed at that height. It helped convince me that a bit of a gap is normal and looks fine, and I actually think the slightly shorter than touching the floor hem length makes the dress move a bit better and the models look less awkward when they are walking. Maybe your MOH could check out these some of those product videos and feel better as well? https://www.asos.com/us/women/dresses/maxi-dresses/cat/?cid=9979&ctaref=cat_header&currentpricerange=20-650&refine=attribute_10313:61431

Assuming your MOH is wearing the same footwear she will be wearing for her wedding in the final hem photos I think it looks fine.
