Is this hem too short?

Mrs. S, on December 6, 2018 at 7:37 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 32
Hi ladies, my moh is getting married next month and she is freaking out bc she thinks they butchered her hem. It is shorter than they originally pinned it and the hem is puckered so she won’t trip? She really wanted the full gown look and she’s upset. They are fixing the pucker but its too short to let it out for more length. I think it looks really pretty still but I know she wanted floor length. Help me make her feel better!

I think it looks fine. Is she wearing shoes in the picture? It think that is a safe length so she doesn't risk tripping.

That is good length if they had it on the floor she could easly trip on it or stepped on. Cause I’m the front and sides it will be like that all night.

The long term standard floor length is 2-2.5 inches above the floor. This is so that anyone standing or sitting, who is looking at a downward angle, will see the gown as just skimming above the toes, and floor, but reducing chances of stepping on the hem and falling, or pulling upper skirt seams off the bodice, which easily happens when you try to move, or lose balance, with one foot of yours or dance partner's, on the lower edge of the dress. The other damage that occurs most often when not a full 2" above the floor, is that the dress hem gets stained, not only dirt, but grass stains, and from things other people's shoes bring in, and also destroyed by residue of floor cleaners, which bleach lower dress edges. Which means you can never keep the dress so another family member can use it unless they are 4-5" shorter, so you can cut off the damaged part of tge dress. . There has been a recent fashion trend to let dresses puddle, drag on the floor even where there is no train. . If the dress maker was told to pin the dress so it dragged on the floor, specifically and in writing, it is the dressmaker's fault if she did otherwise. But if she was told, floor length, and followed the formal wear and costume industries standard for safety , of 2-2.5 above the floor = floor length, than MOH misunderstood what the term "floor length meant, and cannot hold the dressmaker responsible for not reading her mind.

Yup! They are supposed to be about 2” off the ground. I think the length looks correct.

I think that the length is accurate; it may have just been miscommunication.

I agree with this. I cringe a little when I see brides having their front hem touching the floor. It has a bit of a messy, unfinished look and is a tripping hazard. Here are pics of my dress with the hem a couple inches above the floor.

I think she's going to be happy it's a little out of the way, and everyone will be looking at her glowing face, not her hemline. Deep breath, future Mrs. At the end of the day, you're still married!

My dress was hemmed to about that same length. I was a little upset at first because I too wanted my dress to just skim the ground, but I was so happy at my wedding that it wasn't any longer. I would have been tripping over my dress the entire night if it was any longer. It still looks great in pictures too.

They actually did this to my dress! It was with about 3 weeks to go they were able to rush another dress and redo alterations is this an option? I was sooo upset they cut it so short because I also wanted a floor length gown.

If they can't honestly hindsight it really doesn't make a difference if it was a little short or not but I totally get it and I would tell her to express her unhappiness and see how they can make it right. Another option might be different shoes?

I think the dress looks fine. As the other ladies have mentioned, she can avoid tripping or having to lift up her dress all night.

Her shoes are already flats. She is talking about buying a new dress and rushing it but I’m really trying to steer her away from that because she spent half her savings on this dress and she just bought a house but I know it’s up to her so I will definitely share your comment!

Did she get it altered at the same place that she purchased her dress? If so she can tell them how unhappy she is and they should eat the costs of rush ordering her dress. It wasn't where it was pinned too. I used the photos from where it was pinned to where it ended up and that was enough for them to order it for me because it was such a difference.

I totally get it she's so close to her wedding now and this was her vision. I totally become SUPER obsessive of how short it was and I was so unhappy about it. My MIL used to be a seamstress and was shocked at how much more then took off versus what they pinned. I hope they are able to work it out for her.
