Is Pinterest ruining weddings?

I must say that I am avoiding Pintrest completely for the reasons stated above many times now (last by levijohn). I've been reading different wedding magazines though, as I am a frequent traveller and need something to pass time with on the plane or the airports...

When reading your comments though, it seems as the "inspiration" and "ideas" you get presented in the magazines are pretty much the same as the ones on Pintrest (I wonder why.... -.-). And I must say, if I am getting one more barn wedding with "unique DIY" presented, I might just go crazy. None of these real weddings in the magazines where "unique" in their settings and styling anymore - they all looked the same.

I generally love the idea of sharing great pictures and crafting projects etc with others but unless people realise that their inspiration cannot come soley from magazines or Pinterest, weddings will become more and more the same and less unique sadly (especially for people who have done their research).

I love using Pinterest to get idea but I always end up tweeking what I find on there and make it my own. I loved doing crafts before and cooking before pinterest only difference is before I used magazines for ideas or other online sites now I use Pinterest. My friends and I had a Pinterest craft night last weekend and are planning another one soon!

I use Pinterest for many things - recipes, lesson and decorating ideas for school, and wedding ideas. I also use it to keep track of ideas and products that I find in other places. To me it is more like an on-line file cabinet of ideas. What I generally do though, is pin something, look it up, think about it for a while, and if I decide to use it, put my own spin on it. So in that way Pinterest is a very useful tool for me. It is a way to share information. People can do what they want with the information once it is shared.

Pinterest is really helping me I feel like it is a god send lol. While there are some really good ideas on there I totally agree about dresses that don't exist. I spent months trying to find a dress that was on there only to get no results. I was upset at first but got over it when I found my dress for $50. Would post pics of me in it but due to the baby bump I have a couple of months for that lol.

I don't think it's ruining them but I do think its making all those unique and out-of-the-box ideas not so unique and out-of-the-box. I love Pinterest. It was my mason obsession until I found the WW app!! I have 2 years do by the time we say we do, my ideas that I love and have built my dream around will be overused and maybe even boring. But that's my dream and I still want my vision so I don't think it really bothers me so much. Now with the photography thing, I agree 100%. I've done a couple weddings and its my passion so I get it completely when you say that creative license is being stripped away from photographers! I'll give my photographer a list of posed shots I def want but aside from that, it's all her!!

I don't go to many weddings (I've been to maybe fewer than 6 in my 35 years, and only one in 5 years). So I don't know that things are being overdone. Also, my guests are older and married and aren't pinning wedding stuff.

I am doing a little bit of burlap and lace, but we're having a barbecue. Who cares if it's overdone? It's a wedding, not a performance.

I was planning a wedding (that I ultimately canceled) about 6 years ago, before Pinterest existed. I wish it had existed...would have saved me a lot of time looking for ideas and it's so convenient for saving lots of websites for vendors, too. Back then I had to save everything to my favorites list and it was one very long list! So I see the benefit of having Pinterest for planning, information gathering, etc.

The photo booth thing was just taking off when I was planning...it was unique and not expected. Same with barn weddings, candy buffets, etc.

Anyway, I think in general, no matter if it's on Pinterest, in magazines, watching all of the wedding shows that are out now, or just browsing the internet, there is the potential to get "sucked in". I was sucked in to certain aspects back when I was planning years ago. I had to take a step back and ask myself "is this really who I am?" I don't need to impress any of my guests they all love me as I/we are, so I keep this in mind.

I actually don't use Pinterest and I'm doing a wine box ceremony and no assigned seating, so I think it might be creeping into everything!

But I like what the site is doing for weddings. It inspires creativity, makes weddings a lit more casual, and brings on the "I'm broke, let's DIY this with a can do attitude" and I love it

I just hate it now because everyone thinks that having a southern wedding means "mason jars, burlap, lace, hay". I will not have any of those things at my wedding....at all. Well...my dress might be lace, but it isn't a requirement. I'm hoping my wedding will be a little more classic and original, and not so trendy and "cute". The word cute makes me want to barf.

@Kirsten, when people hear "southern wedding" they are also thinking cowboy boots & hats, horseshoes, red/white table cloths, etc. We're going more for the "Southern Bell" meets "Steel Magnolias." LOL.

I will admit that I've never used it! I hear so much about it, I have to see what it's all about!

KierstenMichelle. I feel the same about the word cute. My former roommate overused it like crazy. Before we were engaged, I showed her my (future) e-ring and some dresses I loved and she was like oh that's so cute! Um what? Stunning? Beautiful? Gorgeous? Amazing? None of those??

I have gotten a lot of inspiration from pintrest like so many other people on here.... it has really helped me plan a 'country wedding' on my FH's family farm. I did decide to stay far away from burlap, papet straws, vests, and lace though. I'm taking the ideas but mixing up the colors and textures... which has been a little tricky. Blue mason jar centerpieces (real vintage ones from my late great uncle) and allowing my bridesmaids to pick their own turquoise dresses are 2 ideas im really excited about!
