Is my Father Daughter Dance too long?

Colleen, on May 11, 2016 at 5:10 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

Ever since I was engaged to my ex (but didn't have a wedding) I've wanted to dance to Slow Sweet Walk by Edwin McCain for my dance with my dad.

It's so incredibly beautiful. The words give me chill bumps. Buuutt...it's very slow and feels drawn out. It's 4 and a half minutes and I feel like thats a little long.

What do you think? I asked my DJ if he can cut part of it but I dont know where to cut it at...

Most dances like the first dance and parent danced should be cut short, I think that's pretty typical. Generally about 2 minutes is plenty

Mine was about 3 minutes, and it felt like forever.

I love my dad, but having everyone stare at us while we swayed was weird. Lol We ended the dancing a little early with a big hug, and a bow, because we're both hams. Smiley winking

I dont want to dance that long at all! It's awkward...but I adore the song and wont change it. I just need to figure out how to shorten it. I dont want to just fade it out because I want there to feel like there was an ending to it.

I had mine adjust to a little less than 3 mins and it was more than enough.

Mine is "forever young' by Bob Dylan, and we are having the DJ cut around 2min.

I just can't sway around for so damn long.

Hey Colleen ... I read your OP and came right to post! As a photographer, I lovelovelove the extra time. I for one will never complain about a milestone song being too long. Smiley winking

    Best wishes.

4.5 minutes is a bit on the long side. You can cut it after the chorus or you can start it right after s chorus. Give the song a listen and just find a place that you can cut it and it still sounds good.

I don't know how you would feel about this (or if it would even make sense at your wedding depending on your guest list), but I was at a wedding recently where about halfway through the song the DJ invited all fathers and their daughters to the dance floor. It's a good way to take the attention off of you and your father and also creates a really sweet moment.

Ours was just over 3 minutes and I had the DJ cut it early. 4 minutes will feel like an eternity.

Cut it. I've realized when the dances go on too long, guests occasionally stop watching you and start chatting with their neighbors..very rude.

DJ's can play with songs to make them work, my FH is going to dance with my daughter to a song that was over 5 minutes and seemed way to long so they are going to work with taking parts out to make it shorter

We cut all of the big dance songs to about 2 minutes each. You can try to find a good place that the cut won't seem odd and a talented DJ will be able to make the fade out seem natural. It won't just stop short.

My f/d was about 4 minutes as was our first dance. Our dance instructor had mentioned that most people edit the song to about 2 minutes. We chose not to and I am glad we didn't. The long f/d dance song gave my step dad and dad time to unexpectedly pass me off and I loved the emotion of it.

We cut our song at about 2 minute mark. Our dj just interrupted and said "let's hear it for the bride and her father" and then stopped it. It was perfect because ours was around 4 minutes originally as well.
