Is my alternative cake idea tacky?

So I don't know why but I'm not loving the idea of a huge cake that is so decorated it doesn't look like cake anymore... I think food looks its best when you can imagine what it tastes like. So I was thinking instead of having a wedding cake how about having a ton of smaller cheesecakes or a ton of smaller more delicious looking cakes. I don't know if this would be a good idea or if it would just look too messy and informal on a table. Thoughts?

We're doing sheet cakes for the guests and just a 6 inch decorated cake for FH and I for the cake cutting.

Great idea! I say serve any dessert you thinknis delicious. We aren’t having a cake. We are having our reception at a restaurant so we are just going with the dessert it offers.

What we’re doing is more expensive because the desserts are also our favors. We’ll have half the desserts out for when we cut the cake and have dessert then a little later bring the rest out with the to go boxes as favors. So if we were to cut the number of desserts we’re getting in half which is still plenty of desserts for everyone then it would be cheaper by a few hundred dollars to feed the same amount of guests.

Not at all! We are having a 1 tier small cutting cake for pictures, then a mini dessert bar instead. My fiance doesn't like cake!

We are thinking about having a couple different flavored Buche de Noel's - basically log shaped and decorated Swiss roll cakes. We both prefer frosting to cake and Swiss rolls have a much higher frosting to cake ratio and they look pretty when cut - the roll shape is visible, plus since they are literally a long log of cake they are easy to cut - just slice off from one end. Our wedding is in December so they will be seasonally appropriate and bakeries will already be making a bunch so we are hoping we can get a good deal on them. We will just get varying heights of cake stands to display them on.

I say as long as there's enough dessert for everyone, then do what you want. We're having cake. And A Boston Cream Pie for FH (shhhh it's a surprise and his favorite). And I think some pie too since it'll be Fall and I just really love pie. I really hope our orchard produces this year so we can use home grown ingredients. (Don't worry I'm a professional lol)

They are my favorite Christmas dessert - though we have always bought them. And they are small enough to offer a couple flavor options without blowing out our cake budget.
