Is it wrong to only have *beer/wine* for open bar??!

Ella Marie, on January 29, 2018 at 5:03 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 38
So my Fiancé and I are only planning on having 4 kinds of beer and 4 kinda of wine for our open bar at the reception. It’ll be a smaller wedding and reception. 50 tops. Maybe a signature drink as well. We haven’t decided that yet. That won’t make us look cheap or anything right? It’s a destination wedding as well! Just wondering what everyone’s thoughts on that were!

Totally fine! A signature drink would be a good addition, though.

No beer/wine is perfectly fine. As long as you have some type of alcholol you are good to go. It's just dry weddings that everyone screams is cheap.

Beer and wine is completely fine. If you can do a signature drink that's great but if you can't, that's fine too. You won't at all look cheap at all.

The beers would be Budweiser, Michelob Ultra, Miller Lite and MGD. Wine would be Merlot, Pinot, Chardonnay and White Zin. So it’ll be a good selection! We were thinking of doing a Gin mixed drink and a Vodka mixed drink of some sort. I just don’t want anyone to think we’re “cheap” if it isn’t a full open bar lol! I think we have a good selection though!

Absolutely not! I'm doing the same thing with a few signature drinks and an open liquor bar for those who want to go crazy. It's not cheap, it's smart! This too was my biggest concern but after thinking about it, you are providing your guests with drinks, food and an awesome time! I think you'll be happier in the end knowing that you didn't blow thousands on this and considering the amazing time everyone is going to have regardless. Good luck!

Most of the weddings I've been to have been beer and wine only. I've never thought twice about it.

I would add a craft beer in there. Most of our crowd wouldn't touch any of that beer because we don't really consider it real beer. (beer snobs) There's not one beer we'd be able to drink on your list.

You know your guests best, but I'd go with another beer option. Something darker, maybe a craft beer. I would also go with a dark liquor for one of the cocktails. We are doing a vodka drink and a whiskey drink. But go with what you think will work best for your crowd!

You can't control what people will think. Wine, beer and a signature drink is fine but is it really that much less expensive than an open bar? I had a full open premium bar and did the bill on consumption and mixed drinks were only $2 more than a glass of wine. If you're really concerned, you might want to look at what the difference in price is.

As for selections, you know your crowd best but your beer selections sound interchangeable so perhaps a little more variety of beer (not brand but type of beer) might be nice. Also, for wine, I might switch out the Merlot for a Cabernet and the White Zin for Pinot Grigio or a Rose.

Totally acceptable. Though, when I was thinking about doing that, I was surprised to find out that it's not THAT big of a jump to fully open bar. Only a couple of bucks pp. Of course, your bartender might have different packages so that might not be your case. A signature drink would be good if you can swing it. Maybe 2, something sweet and something a little more...IDK what the word is.

If you want to stick with beer and wine, and the aim is to try and please everyone...I have only found wheat ales that I enjoy drinking. Like a Blue Moon type of thing. I went to one recently and drank Stellas, and after the first couple they started tasting better! Smiley winkingAs for wines, I know it's not for everyone but I love a nice sweet Moscato. I can make do with Riesling. Maybe have a selection that ranges from sweet to dry. Again, I know this isn't the taste of what 90% of people drink, but with 50 at your wedding, there is probably at least a few baby-mouths. lol.

Totally fine. I’m doing the same as we are getting married at a winery that doesn’t have a liquor license. So open beer/wine only!

I'm doing the same, except I'm doing 4 wines and 3 beers and a hard cider!

The resort offered us 4 different beer options and 4 different wines. So I’m not sure as far as how much.

We can only have beer and wine because of town rules for where our wedding and reception will take place, but our guests mainly drink beer and wine so it works out.

Beer and wine should be fine. It gives the opportunity for everyone to have some alcohol. You can add the signature drink if you think you’ll have some people that prefer hard liquor over the beer and wine. I think your guests will be happy either way
