Is it wrong to not cut the cake?

JJWed2018, on March 16, 2017 at 5:05 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 37

I need a wedding guest perspective! I'm thinking about not doing a cake cutting. We are gonna have a big dessert table. If we do have a cake it will just be a one tier cake simply for the sake of cutting. But I really don't get the point so I'm thinking about dumping the tradition. When I'm a guest I rarely even pay attention to the cake cutting. Is that something you would miss as a wedding guest? Is there any creative alternatives? Something that gives the guests something to see the bride and groom do together?

Not sure if it's wrong but I'm not cutting either. My plan is to have a dessert table as well with cupcakes included. Going to ask the bakery to make a small 8-10 inch round for a table centerpiece (just going to sit it on a tall cake tier) because I love pictures with cake toppers. But it's your wedding who cares what other people think anyway !

I don't think it's wrong to not do a cake cutting. I wouldn't miss it as a guest. But if you do have a cake and don't do the cutting, make sure you have a server cut it and serve it on plates for your guests early on in the night. Otherwise no one will touch the cake for fear of ruining it because they're waiting around for the cake cutting. But if you don't have a cake at all I honestly wouldn't miss it. I love dessert tables! I like having options and eating tons of desserts. Lol

I'm planning to have a small cake to cut partially so I can have a small cake to save for an anniversary and I found a really good price for a small simple cake. Otherwise, I agree that I never pay much attention to the cake cutting and as long as there is dessert I'm good.

I've seen it skipped. Not a big deal. Guests just want to eat, drink, and dance. The cake cutting can often seem like a nuisance.

I don't think it's technically a big deal. I know I want the pictures of the cake cutting though. And the top tier for our one year anniversary lol

We're skipping it. We will have a small 2-tier cake to visually anchor the dessert table and just in case someone wants cake (25 servings).

I wouldn't care if it was skipped if I was a guest, as long as you have dessert for me I would be happy

I definitely wouldn't miss the cake cutting (we're not doing one either), but I will say that I often wait to leave until the cake has been cut as it's generally the last thing to be scheduled. Maybe have your DJ say something after whatever would be the last scheduled thing so guests aren't waiting around for it to happen.

Honestly, I don't know the last time i hung around long enough to watch the cake cutting. Actually, I was probably there, but outside talking it up with people I get to see once a year.

The cake? I'm not a fan of sugar, so honestly, eating a piece of cake doesn't thrill me. However, I do have to admit that the gorgeous four or five tiered cake, a piece of artistry as far as I'm concerned, catches my eye each and every time. In fact, I'm one of those guests who will probably take a few pictures of it.

I know that a lot of the people I'm talking to at a wedding love the cutting of the cake, and they really do want a piece with a cup of coffee before they head out into the night. It's up to you, but, IMHO, a wedding cake is a part of the tradition, Nobody will die without it, but more than a few will wonder why there was no wedding cake.

    The decision belongs to you.

I wouldn't notice or miss it as a guest. As long as I can eat cake, I am good Smiley laugh

Thank you for posting this question! I didn't want to do a cake cutting cuz honestly it seems pointless but my parents are saying we have to. Nice to know I'm not alone!

We're not doing it. The last wedding I went to didn't have one, and it was just like, oh, there's cake now! Good enough for me.

We are doing Rice Krispie treats (fancy one!) and brownies. I got a cake topper with our initials just to look nice but we obviously aren't doing a cake cutting. I guess we just announce that dessert is served?

As a guest, I wouldn't miss it. I don't usually watch it, and I very rarely eat the cake.

Okay, I'll admit I really do look forward to it and it's one of my favorites at a reception. But I wouldn't side-eye (or even think twice) if someone chose not too. It's usually quick, the bride and groom are beaming and it's heart-warming to me to see them be a little playful.

We're not doing it. We discussed it and decided it wasn't something necessary so we've decided to put our budget into donuts (we both prefer donuts to cake) but we do plan to have some (professionally baked) cake and cookies for those who would prefer something different.
