Is it tacky to not have options for dinner?

ruby, on March 19, 2018 at 9:59 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 23
We my fh and I are truing to have a very wallet friendly wedding... so far everything that we've been able to get/ hire etc has been right on the threshold we designated as the "amount budgeted" however I'm struggling a little in the meals.. our venue has given us an amazing package that has the food, the booze, linens, servers and the cake... my concern is that if I offer an option for chicken or fish my cost will go up at least by 500 bucks.. I know, considering the costs of weddings 500 is not much, however I'm going in for surgery in a couple of days and this extra money would be better used for my physical therapy sessions... I need some experienced opinions.

I wouldn't say it's tacky, but it's definitely not optimal. What if one of your guests doesn't eat chicken?

I would talk to the venue to clarify the cost of adding a second option before you make a decision.

I don't know if you're already doing this, but if you arent, I would consider also having a vegetarian option available.

I hope everything in your surgery goes well and you have a smooth recovery!

We don't have options but we're doing a buffet. The only options are stuffed chicken or vegetarian.

I'm assuming your venue can offer another main aside from fish that is comparable to chicken. Also, are you having a vegetarian option? That may be enough variety for the non-chicken eaters and hopefully won't break the bank

The cost of their vegetarian meal is similar to the meal we are considering so I can see that as a secondary option. thank you for advice the good wishes 😊

As a guest, I prefer to have a choice, but I wouldn't think it was a big deal if only one entree choice is offered. So if you are trying to keep costs down, I think one choice would be fine. However, you need to be able to cater to vegetarians/ vegans and other dietary restrictions, so I would just make sure you talk to your venue so that's covered.

We are not having options either. Only chicken poblano and vegetarian. It’s not ideal. Of course I would like them to have the option of steak and chicken but it not affordable to us. I went to wedding recently with only one option and i didn’t notice, but heard my fiend complaining about the vegetarian option....bread and side salad. The pasta even has some bacon.

We are having a buffet at our wedding. Pulled pork or grilled chicken. Those are the meat choices. We have lots of sides and fresh salad. You won’t be able to make everyone happy

One of my daughters is going this route. Her reception venue is an amazing Italian restaurant that has a signature chicken dish. They are not doing any options other than a vegan meal if requested. My DH and I were at her tasting and I can attest that it's the best chicken I've ever had! That said, I wish they could offer more variety but it's not in the budget.

I think if you offer a second choice that isn’t chicken but maybe a vegetarian pasta or something, that would be sufficient. It would be great to offer more but I understand the cost issues! I think most people are ok with chicken...if it was red meat or pork or fish, you might have more issues. I’d just be sure to ask about dietary restrictions and if you can open up the veg option as a second choice. Good luck with surgery!

I don't think its tacky but I do think its inconsiderate. A choice of even two entree's is helpful and there should always be a vegetarian/dietary restrictions option even if its by request. Not everyone eats every type of food (I personally don't eat red meat so if I went to a wedding where the only option is steak I would be left picking at my sides all night)

It's definitely worth it to provide at least a meat and a vegetarian dish if you are not offered a silent dietary restriction option at your venue

Vegetarian options come up almost daily here so that’s surprising. Wedding Wire places such an emphasis on guest experience, it’s good that you’re using your Rockstar role and are following up on this. Hope they can accommodate you.

I would say options are definitely needed. Some people may be vegan/vegetarian.

We're just doing steak and chicken (served together) or a vegan meal. The vast majority of wedding I've been to (ranging from moderately priced to very expensive) have not given food choices and people were fine.

I would caution against this. I have friends who even the idea of eating chicken makes them ill. And a few who just flat out dont like it. If it's the only option they would be highly disappointed and leave hungry. Though polite enough they probably wouldn't even say anything.

My cousins wedding was this way. She had this nice venue and all these extra little things that people could care less about but not as much food. My thought is feed your guests and skip something else if you can.

We had 2 meat options 2 pasta options, 2 salad options, several veggies, etc.

If you added a vegetarian meal as an option, I think that is fine. I would also make sure the meat dish is gluten free in case you have GF guests as well.

We're not doing a buffet, with our smaller wedding it didn't make sense, plus we are having our reception under a pavilion and were concerned with hanging enough room for the do to set up as well.... So we went with a duo plated dinner. My venue takes care of catering, and I didn't even see the format for a traditional one entree dinner were guests pick what they want.

Our duo will be grilled filet mignon with a peppercorn Demi glace, baked chicken breast with sun-dried tomato basil cream sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, and a summer squash zucchini blend with heirloom tomatoes. This will please most of our guests, and we also have a vegetarian option of eggplant sliced lengthwise, breaded and fried, ontop of sun-dried tomatoe polenta with mixed seasonal vegetables. Both options start with salads and rolls.

I would look into a duo plated dinner at the least and make sure you at least have a vegetarian option for guests to pick from as you will need to accommodate any dietary restrictions. We don't have any vegans attending, and I spoke to my friends who are koscher, intending to have our venue make their plates special, but they decided on the vegetarian option.
