Is it rude to try on wedding dresses you won't buy?

Sierra, on March 11, 2020 at 3:06 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 27

I do not wear dresses often and certainly not beautiful/fancy/potentially expensive ones. I have zero idea what silhouettes I would look good in or enjoy wearing. I also want to do my research before committing. So my question is - would it be rude to the sales person if I went to a salon to try on silhouettes just to get an idea, but not intend on buying anything that trip? I feel like it must be disrespectful to the consultant but I also don't know how to figure out what I like otherwise. What do you all think?

I don’t think you’re under any obligation to buy a dress just because you try them on. It’s also possible you’ll come back to that store and make a purchase down the line since you are in the market for a dress so I think it’s okay.

There's nothing wrong with trying on dresses and not buying one afterwards. That's the only way you'll find what you like.

Of course, that makes a lot of sense - I have no idea why I am over thinking this.

I know I can be a people-pleaser to a fault and am already anxious about disappointing some consultant I've never met before. Clearly, they know the drill and I am over-thinking this.

I totally understand, most of us haven’t planned a wedding before so it’s hard to know what’s okay and it’s nice that you’re being considerate of the consultant’s time!

Honestly when I went, my consultant told me she didn’t think I’d walk out with one that day because I had just started, and she was totally fine with that! I happened to find the one and she made a sale. While they do mostly work on commission, they’re there to help you find what will make you the happiest. So it’s not really rude to do, there’s plenty of people who try them on and don’t buy that day.

That's encouraging that she told you that! Phew... that makes me feel a lot better about it, honestly.

Nothing wrong with that. I don’t wear dresses either. I didn’t know what I would good in either. I know that if you are like me as being a petite or I call fun size I don’t suggest a poofy dress at all. You will disappear in it. Grab a dress with different styles whatever catches your eye and go from there. I went to 2 places, but some ladies it takes 3-5 places even more. Usually the women that works there they see brides all the time they may point you in the right direction.

I say do it! You don’t know how a certain silhouette will look on you til you try. Another point...this is a huge decision. There is nothing wrong with thinking about it. Just let the sales person know you don’t know what you want or will like and you are trying to get ideas. You never know, you may find the one!

Not at all. I went to 3 salons and tried on ALL the dresses I could. Every shape, fabric, neckline, shade of white, type of sleeves, etc. I took a ton of pictures to reflect on later.

This is just how it works. A good consultant should understand. Frankly anyone who is pressuring you to buy on your first shopping trip is a bad consultant (caring more about a sale than making you happy). My first time shopping my consultant point blank said not to buy that day, even if I fall in love with a dress— it’s just too big a decision to make rashly. Don’t sweat this at all.

What if you went with the intention of buying, but found nothing you like? Would you buy a dress just because?
There is nothing wrong with going to try on dresses, there are so many styles hard to say which one is your “forever” dress.

I went to 7-8 places before buying. I went in intending to buy but tried different silhouettes but didn’t find what I wanted for awhile.

I'd just say don't try anything on that's drastically over the maximum amount you'd want to spend... it would be super unfortunate to fall in love with something that you can't afford. But still no pressure to buy anything you try on just like any other clothes shopping experience.

    Hi Sierra,
Don't worry about that, the only way you're going to find which silhouette looks best on you is to try them on! I went to 8 boutiques and tried on over 40 dresses before I found my dream dress!

I tried on many dresses at many stores before I found my dress, and I knew what silhouette I wanted! I'm also a people pleaser so I get it but keep reminding yourself that this is about you! I've read enough dress regret stories on here to know that the pressure is real but it's important not to be swayed. I went in my first few stores knowing I wouldn't buy anything and that helped! You can always come back and buy it later after you've thought about it.

That's why they are there. To help you figure it out. I did the same the first salon I visited. I'm sure it's not a big deal. Even hypothetically, HYPOTHETICALLY, if they did think it was rude, I can guarantee that they will not remember it for long and will forget after like a day or 2. I'm sure you wouldn't be the first and you won't be the last.

I went to a salon alone and explained to my consultant that I was secretly coming in to get an idea of what I liked before I brought everyone with me. She said if I found something, they'd be happy to play along and pretend like they didn't know me when I came back with the whole entourage of people. I think this is completely fine!
