Is it rude to send wedding announcements to people you are not inviting to the wedding?

alyssa, on November 4, 2013 at 9:40 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

We want a very small wedding with immediate family members only, however we want to to make the rest of our family and friends aware that we are getting married. I don't want to offend anyone by sending them an announcement but no invitation. We live in Arizona and the rest of our family is on the east coast, so that may work to our advantage. Any thoughts?

Nope. Those are exactly the people to whom you traditionally are supposed to send announcements. Just make sure to send the announcement only after the wedding takes place, so it won't be confused with an invitation.

I never thought to send them after the wedding but that makes sense. I would imagine people would still confuse it for an invitation even if the date is not listed on the announcement (say if we sent them before the wedding takes place)..

Definitely to be sent after the wedding. I think really it should have a picture from your wedding day on it really. Or at least I would want that.

I would not wait for a picture. That could take weeks after the wedding. Traditionally, they go out the same day as the wedding takes place.

Do people typically send gifts/money after the wedding, when they get the announcement?

Wedding announcements are for after the wedding to let people know you got married so as long as it's after the wedding people will know what it is.

Send it after the wedding. Expect no gifts - I probably wouldn't send one unless we were very close and you had like, 10 people there

I was wondering about this! I have a HUGE extended family that we won't be able to invite to the wedding (parents cousins, second cousins, great aunts etc...) so I think I will send announcements after the wedding happens. THANKS!
