Is it ok to request gift cards on registry?

Hello! I'm curious as to how people feel about adding gift cards to the wedding registry. We are registered with Kohls and Amazon. We are saving to replace our rotten deck and fencing around our back yard. Gift cards from Lowes (available on Amazon registry) would be super helpful. Does this seem...

Hey! it's your lucky day I got on wedding wire to get some addresses for my baby shower today. We had these on our amazon registry.

We registered on Kohls and Amazon. Both were fantastic. Unfortunately, I know Kohls is discontinuing their registry (or already have). It's too bad, as they were really great. They sent me a gift card in the amount of 10% of the items purchased off our registry. We so appreciated that!

I intend to ask for gift cards towards different experiences (not stores) such as ski resort (ski pass), music lessons, cooking classes, a frame store (we need to get some art framed), and contributions towards AIDS for riding LifeCycle next year. I'm OK with asking for this, the trick is, we have a small apartment that is already full to the brim (with my partner's stuff) and I'm trying to teach him about minimalism - receiving "stuff" is against the ethos we are working toward. We especially don't need $20 do-dads off a registry. Happy to hear thoughts about this...
